Fuel in my 188 is regularly blocked in the fuel filter that's located in the diesel tank. I had it cleaned out but it still gets clogged.
Local said to remove that filter and put in a glass bowl filter down the line - visible & accessible.

Anyone got any expertise in this are?

Plagued with similar down through the years and neighbor suggested putting a small vertical pipe in the tank outlet. Idea is not to let the gunk, silt and rust particles in the bottom of the tank exit and block your filters. It has definitely helped but people more mechanical than I may not recommend.

Inline filter should be fine. Later models like 390 and 690 etc have no filter in the tank but have a gauze filter in the lift pump.

Same problem here last winter, I took out the filter and cleaned it and then cleaned out the tank of all the gunk and dirt. Powerwashed tank as good as I could on the tractor and got a lot of dirt out, let the tank drip out and dry as much water as it could and then poured the same 5 gallons of diesel through the tank straining it each time about 10 times and never a bother since.

Metal tanks are a disaster as they get old, they tend to build up gunk. You need to completely clean the tank, to do this empty tank and remove it from tractor. Get it steam cleaned. Then you have to dry it out. After it is dried out replace it onto tractor. Replace all filters and insert an online filter. However gunk will build up again over the year's. Metal tanks suffer from condensation as tank empties sir enters and condensation firms in the inside if the tank. Air also contains dust. This over time firms the gunk that causes the issues
