Sleep apnea test

Does anyone know where I can go for sleep apnea tests? I'm sure I have it. I believe a GP hinted that I could have it in America as a kid but never went for a test.

I might have a moderate version of it. I'm 21, 165cm and 65kg so not overweight and my parents don't report me snoring so I might not have it at all. The thing is, I wake up and I feel extrmely tired in a bad way. No matter whether I sleep early at 9PM or 11PM. Exercise doesn't help either even though I do it all the time.

How much would it cost to rent the machine?

In my case, my GP referred me to a respiatory/sleep specialist. After seeing them, I was admitted to the Bon Secour hospital in Dublin for an overnight sleep study. I have health insurance so was covered.

I have a couple of friends who were referred to a specialist, but had the sleep study done at home.

I'm not sure of cost, but I'd say the best place to start is with your GP as you will need a referral to a specialist.

Some places that provide CPAP machines also do tests now at home.

If getting referred shop around some consultants charge way more for initial consult, some only see you after the test.

Do you have any mucus in the nose or sore throat in the morning?

There's a great app called pillow which records snoring and percentage of awake, REM, light sleep and deep sleep, which could be a place to start without a huge outlay, can't remember what the in app purchase cost for recordings.

I was also looking at Withings Sleep Analyser for self monitoring it's £110

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Withings-Sleep-Analyzer-Clinically-Under-Mattress/dp/B084HS3HRD/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1GZV7LN387H8Y&dchild=1&keywords=withings+sleep+analyzer&qid=1591197443&sprefix=withings+sle%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-2

The CPAP machine can be covered by medical card and drugs payment scheme.

    Hope that helps.

I wouldn't have any faith in phone/watch apps as they are very basic and don't tell you very much. They only measure two paramaters - movement and heartrate. The theory is that the less you move, the more you're in deep sleep. Specialists would say that this isn't accurate.

A proper sleep study will measure limb movement (legs and arms), heartrate, blood oxygen level, brain activity and how you breathe (mouth or nose) and will also record if you are snoring. BTW, snoring also isn't a great indication of sleep apnoea. You can be a very bad snorer and not have sleep apnoea.

Machine rental is covered by medical card, but only covered by the DPS if you spend more than €124 per month already. Another option is to purchase the machine outright. You will need a prescription in order to purchase from an online retailer.

Machine rental is approx €100 per month. They can be purchased outright for approx. €800. The advantage of renting is that you have ongoing maintenance included and can get any problems remedied quickly without additional cost.

    Symptoms:

    Loud snoring
Episodes in which you stop breathing during sleep — which would be reported by another person
    Gasping for air during sleep

These can be picked up on Pillow app.

    Sleep Analyzer

Sleep Analyzer has been developed in collaboration with sleep physicians from Hôpital Béclère in Paris and extensively tested against data obtained by polysomnography (PSG) analysis, the gold standard of sleep diagnostics.

It utilises a pneumatic sensor to measure respiratory rate, body movement and continuous heart rate in order to track users’ sleep cycles (deep, light, and REM) and cycle durations, as well as overall sleep duration.

The technology also uses a sound sensor to detect snoring. Users can check the number of snoring episodes they experienced and their durations in the accompanying Health Mate app. Results can then be shared with physicians and sleep specialists.

Sleep Analyzer launched in the EU and UK this week, after receiving CE marking for medical devices. It has been crafted in conjunction with sleep experts and clinically validated to provide medical-grade analysis and sleep apnea detection.

    Metrics
Sleep duration, sleep onset and time to wake
Sleep apnea episodes with severity classification
Sleep cycles: deep, light, REM phases
    Continuous and average heart-rate
    Snoring duration
    Sleep Score

Before spending hundreds or thousands on a test I’d be investigating what’s happening when sleeping.

    This.

My GP referred me to the Hermitage respiratory specialist. If you have insurance it's worth the excess. Otherwise you'll be waiting a long time for public.

My machine costs €94 a month but you can buy them for about 700-1000.

Sleep apnoea is a serious condition. I would strong recommend that the OP consult a doctor and not a phone app.

The only symptom the OP is presenting is daytime tiredness which isn't present for all people with Sleep Apnea including myself.
