Haven't a notion about these things so sorry for my ignorance.

A friend of mine has compiled a couple of song books which basically contain every song known to man with simple chords for guitar beginners.

I said to him today that he should try to publish it because it is fantastic. The name of the artist is at the top of each song so he is acknowledging the singer/songwriter.

But he told me he couldn't because of copyright. Can anyone tell me how he can publish this legally? It would be an awful shame if he couldn't.

    Thanks

He would have to get a licence from each of the rights holders to do so.

The rights holder could be the original artist, the record company or some other party.

Usually, sheet music is readily available.
