Dilemma - sell now before warranty expires?

Would love some perspectives on this. Used 2015 Passat, warranty expires over the summer and it's just gone off to the garage on the back of a truck (warranty covered). This is the third warranty issue (but the first tow) in less than 2 years.

I'm starting to think of changing it rather than face potential big bills if stuff keeps going wrong with it.

Had intended holding onto the car for 7/8 years but not sure now.

what would you do? Try trade it in (it's still got a good few months under the Hire Purchase I bought it under though) and move up a few years or ride it out? Probably would look at something other than VW but how would selling it under HP after owning it for 2 years look?

I was offered only €6k for my 2014 passat trade in earlier this year so depending how much you are expecting for trade in value you could get a shock .I certainly did.

2014 would be the facelift of the 2005 shape whereas the 2015 would be the current shape, which would affect the value of it.

    Are the faults related OP?

Not sure what figure I have in my head for a trade in but God I'd hope it'd be in double figures anyway!

Not related. All electrical I guess - this time it's airbags (and unsafe to drive they said), before that there was an issue with the head unit, that only got sorted in March (requiring two trips to the garage). The first time I can't even remember - something to do with engine management and/or the adaptive cruise control in the first few months of 2019. All niggly things but I've been in the garage more than I'd like.

After the third time, I’d probably have little faith in it, and I’d move it on. It would depend on the cost to change though too. If it was nothing major, send it on. Anything too strenuous and I’d keep it, but I’d still be wary of the thing!

That's what I'm thinking. Think there's good value out there for something 2017/18, VW or otherwise? Wonder if dealers are holding their powder dry or eager to shift stuff. But still get lumped with a trade in!

No, I don’t actually. I only had a quick look the other day for another Audi A6 to replace my own, or possibly a VW Arteon and I didn’t think there was any fall off in prices whatsoever. All you can do is call around.

Won't go in with high hopes then. Will see whenever I'm in collecting it and I might have a look at whoever's doing decent hybrids. driving patterns are more suited to those recently.

OP here, thinking some more about this any recommendations for an approach to the dealer? "You sold me a passat, it's not been trouble free, what's the best you can do if I move up a year or two"?

Dealer might not do you much favor to just move up a year or two. Your current car could still cost him money in warranty work for the next owner he sells it to.

True and he's not going to admit it might be a bit of a lemon but I'm sure they'll factor it in somewhere in a deal!

3 unrelated faults in 2 years hardly makes it a lemon.

I know, but I do fear it's got potential. I'll see how it goes whenever I hear back from VW. Presume won't be getting anything about the promised hire car til Tuesday anyway.

I think this is more about having warranty than anything wise, any car can throw up issues.

Agreed, talk to the dealer about buying a warranty extension.

A new car is going to cost you a lot more than potential faults with your existing car.

Car in the dealer til Friday anyway so I'll have a chat with them then when I'm in - good shout on an extended warranty. Informal chat with two salesmen for other marques didn't fill me with hope for a trade in - one suggested maybe 15k trade in, the other 10k.15k I actually would consider trading up to 2017/2018 models of some cars, 10k not a hope

Don't fall for the trade in price always look at the cost of change. Its easy for a garage to give you 15k trade on a 30k car vs a garage giving you 10k off a 20k car.

Absolutely, any sums would only work with a good trade in and also them coming down on the list price of what I've seen online. Really depends on if they're eager for business and the impression I'm getting from other threads is dealers aren't in panic mode. One of the salesmen I was talking to said they're quiter than they'd like but expect things to pick up alot when the 20km limit comes in and people feel they can move more and go to showrooms.

They are in for a shock. The biggest recession in history is coming and they think people will be buying new cars!
