Will my UK reg van be legal to drive?

I bought a UK reg van a couple of weeks ago. Insurance said they usually only cover uk reg vehicles for 30 days but under the current circumstances are now relaxed on that policy. The only other thing is, its MOT will expire in a months time, will it be legal to drive here as I cant test it in a CVRT centre as I can't vrt it into irish reg until the nct centres open.

I'd say it wouldn't be legal as the MoT stations in the UK are open and they aren't extending or suspending certificates. You'd want to ask the question of your Insurance too as you might find they won't insure you with no MoT

This may work for you, not sure on time limit if its too near expiry...basically they swap MOT for CVRT, as far as I know current situation is all valid CVRT's are extended by 3 months similar to NCT so in theory if you can get the recognition cert it should extend to match...

wouldn't they need a new reg number first?

Gards don’t even know what an MOT is. Don’t worry about it

I'd want to check with the insurance company I can't see them being OK with driving with no test.

Can't they do it by VIN number?

CVRT are private operations, cant see why they wouldn't test it for you.

I reckon that MOT 6 month extension is only valid in GB*. They are updating the online checker, but not the certificate expiry date. If you go online with the V5C Doc reference number, it won't generate a PDF MOT with the revised expiry date.

(*MOTs in NI being slightly different and anyway there are other random-bloke-on-the-internet opinions that are available)

Did anyone ever get a definite answer on the MOT Extension validity for a NCT Transfer?

I'm in the same boat, MOT COVID extended to 24 Jan 2021 on a car I just VRT'd, but NI MOT Cert expired on 24 July 2020.

Will they give me a NCT for the remaining period or will I have to get it VRTd ASAP.

I might post it off anyway and chance my arm, if the guards stop me I'll show them the GOV.UK print-out and hope for the best.

You'd want to be thinking about your insurance as well as the guards driving around with no test.

Haha this was the only relevant thread I could find. Have sent off the request for a NCT MOT conversion inc the extension, will act oblivious until they tell me any differently.

I have the gov.uk print out in the interim if I get stopped.

First available VRT appt is 21st Oct so might book one as a back up, just in case.
