2013 BMW transmission harsh shift

    Hi everyone.
I've got this annoying problem with the automatic transmission on my 2013 bmw 520d.
It's been exhibiting harsh shifts, especially 1st to 2nd gear but also when coming quickly to a stop from 2nd gear.

It's been doing this for a few years, I've replaced the solenoid valves in the valve body and the oil (3 times by draining). It's definitely better, as it used to jerk violently 1st to 2nd when cold, but the harsh engagement can still be felt. Otherwise, from the 3rd gear up everything is ok.

There have never been any errors stored.

I haven't yet taken the transmission apart to have it rebuilt.

    Has anyone encountered this issue?

Could it be coming from the transmission bands or from the torque converter?
I am wondering if it's not also related to the tc because sometimes even on 1st gear, once I reach around 1100 rpm I can feel a clutch engaging or some rattling noise.

How much could this repair cost?

Does the rev counter fluctuate up and down in the low gears? If so it's more than likely the torque converter on it's way out alright.

It could be as simple as dodgy engine mounts though. Is the engine showing much movement when you rev it?

There's no slip, I would tell. I've also replaced the engine mounts, transmission mounts, maf and map sensors. Nothing.
Before replacing the solenoid valves (which were difficult to get, I got them from China, didn't want to replace the entire valve body), the 1st-2nd shift in the morning was like a car had hit me from behind. So the valves definitely were involved, but not totally.

At its best, all I get to have is a slight push from behind when shifting 1st-2nd, long after getting to operating temperatures and many low gear shifts.

But it's annoying because I can feel something is not right when braking quickly right after shifting into 2nd gear - it jerks.

How much do repairs to the tc/transmission bands usually cost?

Did you ever take it to a professional garage or just diy it

Yes, replacing the valves and fluid was at a garage. They also checked the valve body on a device that measured its operating values, said the valve body was in specs.

So I guess it's either the tc or seals/bands in the transmission.

Tc I've heared is not so expensive, but I don't know about the others.

Not sure about not too expensive for torque converter. You'll be looking at 2k plus I'd say.

Go to a good bmw specialist, not a bmw dealer.

    2k repairing a torque converter?
Then how much is to repair a transmission, 4k?

You need to take it to a transmission specialist to be properly diagnosed, anything else is just going to be speculative at this point.

So how much are the average prices?
I'd want to know if it's just cheaper to buy a used transmission and have mine replaced.

I've no idea, you need to find out what is actually wrong with it first. The problem could be electronic rather than an oily bit, who knows until it's looked at by a specialist who can then give you a price to repair.
