I need to relocate the VM Hub in my room to the other side and the 2m white cable supplied & connected is too short

I've seen some on Amazon, various prices/shipping etc

Is there anywhere in Ireland that supplies? Need a 5m one

5 star cables do one and all in price inc shipping will set me back approx €20 but if there was a local supplier and preferably cheaper I would use them

    Thanks

I have used a 10 metre satellite cable I bought in PowerCity to move the modem into the attic a number of years ago without any issues

    ok good to know

I would have thought they were different type cables?

Will a satellite cable not slow it down as its supposed to be fibre?

RG6 cable is what you would need.

It's not fiber, its "fiber powdered".

Crap quality coax will cause issues, anything half decent should be fine.

I wouldn't mess with the Virgin coax. They use good quality cable, what you get for satellite dishes is junk.

Just get a small switch from Argos for 27€ and a 5m Ethernet cable. This it very easy to set up, plug and play instead of having to crimp your own coax cables and risk messing things up.

I hadnt thought of that, I am running a few ethernet cables at the moment so I could always make up an extra 5m one to bring across the room

Will any switch do and is this the normal price for one? €27?

CT100 type satellite grade certified co-ax is always recommended for satellite/aerial install but unfortunately there are those that install the cheaper option

what I am thinking now as an option is running a cable from the VM Hub into the attic and put the switch up there

It will allow me to run various cables from the switch then to a few rooms so I can have ethernet options in them

As my VM hub is at the front of the house, when you are in the back garden the wifi signal is gone 2ft from the back door and ideally I would like that extended

Can you get these switched with a wifi extender option on them?
I would place the switch in the attic at the back of the house

Running all your cables to one point such as the attic is an excellent idea, its what developers that pre-wire would do.

An access point can have a switch built into it but it might be better for you to buy two independent devices.

    Put this in the attic:

And this(or similar) in the rear of the house, if the room facing the garden is the kitchen maybe there.

Attics for your AP can be poor as insulation etc can impede the signals and if you ever have to reset it youll have to go to it. Unmanaged switches can be on for a decade with no issues.

    Thanks for the info

I’ve ordered the 8 port switch
Will leave the WiFi extra for now

    Ran a few cables today
    Bad idea in this heat
    Attic was like a sauna

Job done at least for now
