My wife has spotted a car with this lot. Motor land.ie.

However I noted they are in Ballymount which raised a suspicion

Does anyone have any advice or experience (or warnings)?

    Many thanks!

I think Bill griffin owns it and he doesn’t have a good reputation, its only open a few weeks, its absolutely massive

Thanks for the reply. Yeah they seem to have a huge stock. And are asking 10% to 15% less than other dealers for the same stock which is always a concern. However they have a particular car that she likes that’s not easily gotten elsewhere.

Just check the history and maybe a mechanical inspection and ask about warranty. If everything is okay theres no reason not to buy it

The infamous Naas road triangle of doom! I’d just be very wary, I’m often of the opinion that buying from a reputable long established dealer can be very much worth it for the peace of mind and good service.

Stock looks very much ex fleet stuff from Leaseplan etc which can be good buys as they’re serviced correctly

    Which car is it ?

Had a look and didn't see anything that really stood out as special or rare

But even Bill Griffen, I wouldn't be the most trust worthy of

It’s the blue Mazda 6. It’s not especially rare alright but the year, car type, colour combo etc there aren’t many. Her current car is on it’s very last legs and needs a grand worth of work and Nct will be due whenever that comes back on stream.

With the lockdown we don’t (can’t?) travel too far either and this is local.

Yeah I know people triangled in the past. I normally buy off one specific local dealer but she won’t go to him as he doesn’t stock mazdas.

Bill Griffin has an excellent reputation. Naturally when you are in business for a almost 70 years you'll always get some snowflakes who expect the world and complain because they don't get what paddy in the pub told him he should get.

But of all the garages around there, they are there the longest and have a very good reputation.

You don't stay in business for 70 years by not giving good service

Go have a look at this thread first if thinking about buying a Mazda diesel

Its an awful long thread, but better to see it now than later

Buying a used Mazda 6 diesel from anyone especially this type of dealer would be mad. Good few of them went into Leaseplan (I had one from new as a company car). While i really liked it, as i was parting ways with it engine light was coming on/losing power.
Would reset itself but as I was moving jobs basically very soon I just left it to the next driver to sort. Ended up needing new Turbo and injectors- a less than 3 year old very well minded and serviced car. They have enermous appeal and look great but the diesel is flawed and there are too many bad stories floating around. And that was just my own one.

    This one? https://www.motorland.ie/car-details/2517043/

That isn't the Top spec either which would be Platinum. Think mine was an Exec SE with the light pack. That looks like a standard Exec SE. All the signs point to ex fleet alright.

I'm weary of of buying any car secondhand, but with alot of main dealers in dreamland about the value of secondhand cars, all I want is a honest product with abit of value. So wouldn't rule out car stores like this. Seems to be the future of trade. High volume low margins ?

Decent dealer but avoid Mazda 6 diesels

Are the new ones still that bad yeah? I know the previous generation had lots of issues but i had hoped the newer ones might have solved that.

I’ve always had a diesel for towing so I am no stranger to the usual fly wheel, turbo issues etc.

That’s the one alright. She’s ok with the spec level (alloys, sensors, Bluetooth) so that’s not an issue.

She’s in a 08 petrol 6 at the moment but there are hardly any petrols about.

The current model still has issues.
I would have bought one only for that. They’re a lovely looking car but not worth the risk.

Balls. Thanks a mill. It’s as much Mazda Ireland that are the risk!

    Reassessment time.

Its not rare. There is just a serious haircut on the price compared to others which is why I assume you're so sweet on it.

I'm sure plenty of folk buy off BG with no issues. But the problem with BG appears to be when there is an issue post sale, they don't want to know. Combine that with the underlying diesel issues of mazda engines, I would recommend you pass.

That car would list at least €35k new and a few years later is going for €15k. Would appear a bargain and on merit a fantastic car for the money but Mazda that engine - while a great performer when going well and very light on fuel, the risk is just too great
