Most US airlines filed for chapter 11 after 9/11 also. Delta, United, etc.

It’s basically a way for them to legally restructure, pay their debtors 20c on the dollar and screw over their staff by making them redundant and then rehiring them on worse contracts.

It also resulted in a lot of consolidation of airlines; expect the same again this time around but more global.
