I'd imagine no home insurance company would acknowledge them as a proper alarm system for one.

Have one installed for about a year and very happy with it. You would need to buy more contact sensors and motion sensors to suit your home so that is not all you are going to pay.

It falls back to battery power if there's a power cut and it falls back to using mobile network if the Wifi goes down. You get texts, push notification and email if the alarm is triggered.

We have the outdoor cameras which integrate with the alarm so changing the alarm to part guard for the night (Home mode) automatically changes the camera modes too.

As for home insurance - you'll probably only get a reasonable discount on your premium if it's installed and maintained by a professional and is connected to a monitoring centre.

I'd wager that the cost of that each year cancels out the discount you get from having the alarm in the first place. You would need to work it out.

The only negative is the lack of a siren outside - they just released one but it's practically an advertisement for Ring and I wouldn't have it on my home. I also don't like any potential burglars knowing the protection that is in place.

The siren isn't a problem for me though - if the alarm goes off and I'm away I would check the cameras and call the gardai if required. You'd definitely wake up if it went off when you were at home. Neighbours would only ignore the alarm if they heard it anyway

I'd imagine no home insurance company would acknowledge them as a proper alarm system for one.

The insurance companies also require that it be professionally maintained once a year, which most people don't do, which just gives them an excuse to not pay out if their is a robbery.

Also such maintenance and pro monitoring will cost more then the discount.

So most people recommend not taking out the home alarm discount.

If I'm not mistaken, the mobile network fallback only works if you are subscribed to the Ring monitoring plan for €10 per month?

I wouldn't recommend this. Fair enough if you don't like the look of the siren, but at least get one of the other fake ones off Amazon.

One of the most important things about having an alarm system is to use it as a deterrent. You want a potential burglar to know you have alarm and cameras, in the hope that they won't see you as an easy target and might move onto a different house without an alarm, etc.

It is normal for alarm system to have a bell box in Ireland, so a house without one becomes a more attractive target in Ireland as they think you don't have an alarm.

Sure your alarm will still go off, but by then they may have already smashed a window or broken a front door and even with the alarm going off, they might as well grab a few things while there, grab laptops or other valuables out in the open. Sure they have already gone to the effort to break in and it will probably take the Gardai and hour to turn up anyway.

They could do thousands of euros of damage and theft in just 5 minutes.

Best to try and avoid all that by ideally having a real siren or failing that at least a good quality fake one.

Yeah I forgot to mention that. I pay €100 a year for 3 cameras saving to the cloud and the assisted monitoring. I was paying it before I got the alarm anyway so didn't think of it, but it is an extra cost.

I agree with you but in my case, we live on a busy road that is very visible from the front and have automatic gates.

We also have a ring doorbell camera, a floodlight cam on the side and floodlight cam on the back. The place is well covered to anyone scoping it out.

My comment about siren was really about it being tacky and practically unusable.
