They'll be quite a few channels going in the next year one way or another.

Where did you hear that info ?

Logic. Ad revenue is way down.

Yeah, still only free to air in SD. Kind of surprising at this stage since so many other news channels are HD and FTA.

When channels disappear are FREESAT boxes left with a dead channel you must skip or do they automatically update the firmware to erase the missing channels and reassign the numbers accordingly so your not left with a messy GUI with random dead channels?

Each night they should run an update and clear those missing channels. Sometimes numbers are reassigned, sometimes not. That's official boxes, others may not do this.

Cheers Atlantic, so with OFFICIAL boxes would the following channel guide be good for a few years or are they changing every few months with new frequencies, closing dead channels etc?

It's a very high level list of primary channels, it's missing Quest, Pick, Paramount, 5Star and numerous others.

https://www.freesat.co.uk/tv-guide/ you can set your default location too based on what postcode you set up with (my guess is either Belfast - BT1 1AA - or London - E1 1AA) too.

    That list is years old

Here is the current list https://www.freesat.co.uk/whats/full-channel-list/

Freesat TVs and boxes automatically remove and add channels, just like on Sky or Virgin Media. You should never need to retune

The dead number is hidden or the channel replaced, so if 146 goes off, the EPG listing shows145 and 147, no blanks.

Travel Channel (Sky 178) is closing tomorrow

But HGTV +1 is becoming FTA on Wednesday

Travel is one of the longest-standing channels on the platform and was one of the very few FTA say 18 years ago. Not sure it had anything worth watching recently however.

    Freesports has gone!

edit - it's gone from Freesat - carriage frees.

Interestingly, Travel has not actually closed. Its still running but off the EPG - its still on cable so it may be there as a distribution source.

Freesport still FTA on my non Freesat branded box.

Ballparkwise what would be the transmission costs for an SD channel per year?

All that is gone is the EPG listing on the proprietary Freesat EPG (in other words, because the term often needs clarification around here, those boxes that actually specifically say “Freesat” on their front). The channel is still broadcasting and hasn’t gone anywhere.
