QA on a suckler farm

Folks, we only kill 1 or 2 cull cows a year. Often nothing killed.

Regarding the Bord Bia QA I'm wondering is there any material advantage to it? Truth be told it might be laziness on my part but work life, family life and farm life all escalating and this record keeping has slipped so I'm wondering now if it's worth it. What do ye reckon?

Similar set up here as yourself and I think QA is pointless as it stands. Cows dont qualify and extra paper work and inspections. Leave well alone would be my opinion

Thinking the same. Might let it slip. Handy to have it done for cross compliance is the only thing

While technically processor's pay nothing for QA cows when there are plenty of cattle they penalize them.

For a suckler farmer it depends on what stage he sells his cows at and where. If finishing and spending ti the factory then yes he should Benin QA. If he sell in the mart finished there may be more competition for them even if a finisher intends to feed them further as QA days on another farm count towards the 70days.

However if you sell as store's it more than likely makes no difference.

It has its advantages for cross compliance maybe? Forces you to keep things up to date?

Suckling here as well. I wouldn't want to drop out of QA, main reason is you have more selling options. Secondly as Bass says, it helps keep everything in order.

I'd agree, with herd watch it's simple enough to be compliant
