Old heather bed

I have an large old heather and conifer bed (30+ years) and much of the heather is woody or even dead wood. There's still a good show of green and flower but it's impossible to pick put and cut out the dead wood without leaving unsightly gaps or damage the healthy growth. They were lightly trimmed back every year but look tired now. Any way to rejuvenate the area without destroying it in the process?

    Thanks.
