Looking for 40/50 series John Deere Clutch Pressure Plate

    Hi,

A relation has a 2450 John Deere. The pressure plate is cracked.
Its €850 for a new clutch kit. €650 for just pressure plate.

Tractor is in a sorry state and owner not wanting to put this money into it.

Its an odd ball pressure plate with 23 spline teeth and 320mm diameter.

Any ideas who may have a 2nd hand one?

Went through most breakers here, but no joy. Any good breakers in UK who might have one?

    Or, can they be repaired?

    Cheers,
    Steve

Well I suppose you could get an engineering shop to fabricate a replacement plate and fit it back into the assembly. I would hardly expect it to be much cheaper than just buying one though. You could ask though.

Another option is to dismantle it, bevel the edges with a grinder, set it up carefully at right alignment, and weld it back together and then smooth off the face.
It is a rough and ready hack. The worst that can happen is it won't last a week and you're back where you started. nothing lost.

A few big breakers of John Deere in the U.K.
Nick Young is one that comes to mind.

What's the JD part no? How much do they want to spend? I think this is available in usa, shipping with fedex would probably be another 100.

I see you have a want to buy ad elsewhere, try UK or Germany as well, someone is bound to have one sitting on a shelf.

    Cheers for replies everyone.

Don't think welding or diy repair will be easy. Unless there was someone who specialised in rebuiding these luk clutches in Ireland.
(The rivet heads are 3-4 times the size of the shank, so not easy to diy remove.)

No part number stamped into pressure plate :-/
The clutch part is shown here -> https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/sidebyside/pin/l02450t770209/equipment/70578/referrer/navigation/pgId/207784316

    AL120027
    SUB FOR AL41714, AL64417, AL67046
    Alternative Parts A-AL39592
So 5 different part numbers shown.
And when you look these part numbers up, you get conflicting info. Some say 330mm and others say 320mm. Very few websites state the number of splines.
If buying new and shipping from abroad, you'd want to be sure really.
I'd say budget would be 300-400.

Will try casting a bigger net with breakers.

If anyone knows of other breakers in Ireland/UK/Europe let us know.
(Will drop Nick Young an email with photo.)

    Thanks,
    Steve

Clutchfix Ltd in Bradford will make/fix anything.
    Look them up on Facebook.
Wouldn't think they'd be much cheaper than buying from Deere, but you never know...

Nick Young in the UK replied with photos at 6:11am next morning. £100 ex vat, ex delivery. Its not an exact match - it has 23 splines but a slightly larger outside diameter of 330mm (old one was 320mm)
Nick Young says it will fit. Might have to get flywheel machined, as its very close to 330mm (I was reading -> https://www.bareco.com.au/files-jdeere-jd50 )
Ideally would like to get my hands on it before paying delivery etc. as its still a bit of a gamble if it will fit.

Just going to give a fella in Galway another another chance to see if he has one.

    Cheers

Done a 40 series for me , never looked back .

Tried William, sent photos, travelled up to him, left it (flywheel, disc, pressure plate, the lot) with him for a few days (as requested), but he couldn't fix it. Didn't have the parts. Was an odd-ball clutch he said.

Got back onto Nick Young in the UK. He got an exact match for me, 2nd hand. Had it within a few days. Job done.

I've dealt with him a bit over the years and he actually is a gentleman when you get to know him. He's a busy man running a very busy but efficient business. If you ring him and just want a chat about the job you're doing, forget about it, he'll hang up the phone, if you ring and don't know what you want you'll get the same response, if you want to haggle about price, i'm afraid it's the same response again!

But if you know what you want, and you're not wasting his time you'll get what you want. When he gets to know you he won't even question you and if you turn up there looking for something he will send you down the yard and let you work away yourself, just go in and tell him what you got before you leave. There's always a queue of 5 or 6 people in front of him in the shop as well as a phone constantly ringing and all their online business, he doesn't have time to waste and he doesn't need a time wasters business! Cut straight to the point, tell him what you need and you'll get on 100% with him.

He's well priced for most items too and he knows his business and his competitors inside out, he knows you won't get it much cheaper anywhere else so he doesn't need to haggle.

    You found me out!!

If I had the money he has I wouldn't be reading Boards at this time on a Saturday night!

It's just the experiences I've had with him over the years that thought me them lessons about him. I'm sure there'll be more lads here with the same.

Its a price setting exercise , if you take his price all is sweetness and light if you try to deal as per normal for 2nd hand goods its vitriol , I imagine the returns policy is similar, its a way of maintaining margin in a rough business hence his edge ; horses for courses.

Have to agree with this he's an absolute gentleman. The release bearing went in a 3350 i have but had also shattered the plastic cover before the clutch plate. Got the bearing and seal from TFM but rang John to see if he had the clutch part. He said he'd take a walk around the yard later and rang me back later and said he'd leave it hanging on the rail the next morning ( Sunday). Asked him what I owed him and he said don't worry about it.

Thing that riles him is people going in thinking they can haggle and act the maggot at the counter like they are dealing with some private seller off donedeal. I heard one lad in there asking had he got a fuel pump for some ford tractor and John said yes he has one. The fella asking then said "is it alright?" People who think they can go in and get something for nothing are not tolorated and rightly so in my opinion.

Have to say I had a totally false impression of him until I visited the yard, to call him very busy is an under statement, I've called to the clock on a few occasions and I can't fault the service. He has some awful gobs****s to deal with, and deal with them he does.
