I’m wondering what’s the way to set up a second herd number in one of the children’s name as he is showing an interest in the pedigree route. Is there much into it and what are the requirements.
    Thanks.

A second herd number can be a pain
Easy to get, separate plot with handling facilities
    Just contact local DVO
It’s the wintering and movements that causes the issue, unless you’ve housing on the 2 plots

Yeah was thinking that about the housing there’s an old byre where I was thinking. That would be ok I hope until it gets a facelift.

You'd need a crush as well

I think some fellas buy a mobile one, get the number, then sell it on.

I’ve one in the field I’d be using as is, so works out grand.

Were you reading the articles about the fellas buying very cheap marginal land and setting up their kids on it in order to get entitlements etc?

A second herd no. is awkward. Would need to watch movements etc.

Plus would they need to do a tax return for the 2nd no? DAFM and Revenue would know they're actively farming which they'd probably consider a business. So who would pay the tax on the profit?

Also under current TAMS they'd only be a young farmer for 5 years so if thinking of building in the future and accessing their enhanced TAMS they would be timed out in 5 years.

+1 on delaying getting a second herd number. The benefits to young farmers are huge, with the top up on single payment, Tams2 etc. The clock starts ticking on the 5 years once the a herd number is got. These are huge to making a farm better. It gives the opportunity for 60k investment for free. 20k in the yfs scheme to fund (40%tams) 30k (60% Tams2) and approx 13.5% in vat. A lot of money not to be sniffed at
