Ok. So I have been mountain biking for a while. And all in trail centres. However I do a fair bit of hiking and sometimes encounter mountain bikers up where I am hiking.

I'd love to try this but dont really understand. I'm based in the northwest (sligo) and was wondering do I just head out on the bike? I always imagine it will be too boggy for it on the local hills. How do people decide where to go etc.?

I would have the ox mountains and dartry mountains in easy reach. Wpukd these be suitable?

Strava segments are a good way of finding trails.

    Join your local mtb club.

they are probably the ones maintaining and building a lot of the natural trails
you get insurance cover via cycling ireland
met new people and get to find all the good trails etc..
get to give back via build days etc...

trail centers are ok but not a patch on good natural trails imo

Like booooonzo said find you local mtb club and join it. I was in a similar situation as yourself early last year, had been doing the trail centers and felt like moving on and improving my skills. Used strava and the like to find enduro trails but spent most of my time getting lost or not giving it a proper run as i was on my own. Joined the club and everything changed. There's a wealth of knowledge in the clubs on locations, equipment, trail maintenance etc and of course you're out riding with people more skilled then you so naturally your skills come along too.
