Manager at work in his late 50's, old fashioned to say the least and is old fashioned with the way he deals with things also, people specifically.

Team leaders all just try to keep him happy even though everybody knows hes incompetent and he has a reputation for having a short fuse. He has everybody in fear of him and as he is in a position of power, people try to please him regardless of his manner. He makes everyone's life difficult needlessly.

Why is nobody standing up to him?

Why don't you ask them or ask yourself?

This is the answer to your final question.

People below him are obviously scared / worried about their prospects. And he must be doing OK in the view of the people above him.

But, time moves on and nothing stays the same forever.

What you allow is what will continue. Stand up for yourself, go above him and complain, cite your rights. People like that are only as powerful as the power you give them. Escalate things and seek external support if needs be. Work is a means to earn an income so you can have a happy life, no job should be making you miserable.

Written contemperaneous records. They say keep a diary. Word has created dates. Write everything down. Keep e-mails. HR hates evidence. **** him.
