I want to put a gate from a field onto a 3.5 meter public road but there is a telephone poll in the way, which would need to be moved 10 meters along the road.

Who would I contact about this and how does the process work?

Depends what it is carrying, ESB for power, Eir for telephone. Expect it to be more expensive than you think.
Probablly cheaper to move the gateway!

There was no consultation with landowners when all these poles were being put into place to facilitate phone lines and to move it now is a cost even though its on your property

Poles are s standard distance apart as much as possible. Most of these pole runs were done 40 years ago. It is likely even if consulted then nobody would have seen the necessity of a gate there at the time

There is an issue at present where house owners have moved walls back 6-8 feet from edge of road for planning reasons. This has left poles stranded and they are a H&S issue. Eir says they need to be paid to move them. Councils are starting to make it a condition if planning that poles are moved but many are stranded there twenty years now.

OP if it at the side of the road it will more than likely be a telephone pole. Generally ESB goes across fields,Eir stays on the side of the road. I move the gate if I could rather than getting the pole moved. If you really need it to be moved expect a bill in the 2-300 bracket minimum. Eir have a number 1901 and try to get through on that. You could try emailing them as well. But like all utilities unless you are getting new services or paying a bill anything out of the ordinary is a disaster. If you say you need poor moved for H&S reasons it may speed it up

They plonked in a pole outside our existing farm yard entrance over 40yrs ago but its really interfering with the road sight line now with incresed traffic and speed which was not a problem back then

Neighbour moved in the wall in front of his house and wanted two Telephone poles moved in. You have to pay a few hundred just to get Eircom to come out and look at it. He was quoted near 4500 ( if you confirm you are getting the job done within a few months they will deduct the call out charge from the bill). The esb are way easier deal with and pay

Had the exact same problem a few years ago.Phone pole in the way where I wanted to widen a gateway.
Lots of phone calls etc and getting passed from one office to another.Complete waste of time.
Eventually a vehicle" hit" the pole and knocked it over somewhat leaving it a health and safety hazard.
When Eircom arrived next day to replace the pole after I had rung them I asked them to move it a few feet up the road which they did.
Not recommending this approach but it worked.

When I moved here 10 years ago I couldn't work out why a 40 metre length of the telephone cable supplying my place, 2 poles away, was lying on the ground. Eircom eventually came out and basicaly wrapped it around the nearest pole to pull in the slack.

Couple of years ago I became friends with the local farmer and he admitted that he had moved the pole, which had been in the way in his silage field with a loader and placed it next to the ditch adjoining the lane. Thereby being closer to my place hence the excess. The brace wire was left dangling and became a hazard so Eircom came out and re-braced it.

He had tried to get it moved several times by Eircom but was quoted 2 grand to moved it 50 metres.

I think everyone knows the real answer here. It involves a unknown digger driver and an unfortunate pole.

Slightly different situation here, ESB poles in a field with 4 stay wires from it into the ground, and they are a pain in the arse, for topping or doing anything, often wondered if I pulled them up the next time a digger is in would I be in bother. Or can you ask the ESB for permission ??

Ask the ESB for permission. They will say no. They're not there for decoration.

Dont accidentally pull them up, because you will be responsible for it

Unusual for four stays on a pole. Is there a transformer on it (metal barrell about the size of a 5gallon drum)or is there wire going in different direction from it. The stays are there for a reason. If there are wires in different directions if one get broken 3-4 poles a way such a pole not stayed could fall or break and that is extremely dangerous, and if it HT it extremely dangerous

No transformer on it. Sorry it is 2 poles side by side so there is 2 stay wires on each pole. I can see a line of them along the neighbouring fields with no stays on them.
