replacing daily driver laptop

Current is Dell 7566 which has given fantastic use these last three years.

Really quiet when gaming and has a GTX 960

looking for a replacement but needs to be reliable . Every mention of the Dells current says they get too hot and too noisy

this was a good buy for around €1100 back then - whats the current selection look like ?

Not really gaming first purpose more daily business ( dev, email, , good screen ) has to be hard-wearing, 15inch, not too concerned about CPU or cutting edge graphics more about overall package

Previous driver was an XPS15 and the fans on that were just doo-lally . Yes I know a good graphics card generates heat - this is why it doesn't need to be the latest gen

what are you planning to use it for?

thermal design for graphics cards and powerful cpus is fine if done correctly.

for an extra £100 you can get the 8-core 4800h cpu over the 6-core but there is not a massive difference

Sorry should have said the Lenovo Legion Y540 . My primary concerns here

are

1. 15.6 display to keep me from squinting too much
2. Reliability and durability its on the go and on the move all day long ( think business more than consumer grade )

3. Good ( not cutting edge or anywhere near it ) graphics but needs to be very quiet ( the odd gaming or creating spell ) the Lenovo X1 looks tasty but far too dear

The Asus looks a bit too trendy for me !

the g14 is much sturdier than the y540

it is business grade all-metal chassis

the y540 is plastic fantastic and will not stand up as well to constant transport and moving around

it's also 2.3kg vs 1.6 kg for the g14 which is huge in terms of portability factor. basically 50% heavier

the g14 has great battery life. the y540 has typical gaming laptop battery life -e.g. really bad

14 inch screen is fine to work on imo

that lcd "trendy" lid thing is only on the most expensive g14 models. not the one that I've linked. it's fairly pointless imo.

All honesty its not doing it for me the reviews dont sell it at all , not that worried about long battery life. that hinge looks like a gimmick and the noisy fans are a massive turnoff. Also it seems more like a prime gamer model not a worker model that can game as well.

definitely not a hardocore gaming laptop - it's the closest thing that you can get to what you have said your uses are imo

the Y540 is a gaming laptop

this is a portable, well-built laptop that can also game. it's more like the lenovo x1 extreme and dell xps but with better cooling and thermals than those machines.

the fans are only noisy on manual mode - not in general

here it is at full gaming pelt - only has the blowing sound, not the "whine" which is what is most annoying with fans

there will be no fans with the gpu off using nvidia optimus

you're talking about business grade build and portability being important - that is exactly what this offers

normally battery life is important if its going to be portable/moved around a lot as you describe?

won't recommend it anymore but not sure how this doesn't meet what you have described (aside from the screen size but I would argue 14 inch is fine having used all sizes from 13 inch to 14 to 15.6)
