Can I rent a herd number. A farmer beside me is cutting back and said I could rent his herd number. Is that true or is he talking entitlements.

You can put animals into his herd number. But the animals have to be on the land he declared for the BPS. If the department inspected him and found no trace of the animals on his land he is in bother.
They have to be on his land.
You can’t have animals from different herd numbers on the same farm either. That’s a big no no.
Unless he is renting you his land as well or you rent land and declare it on his BPS. It sounds kind of messy really.

That’s not true you can have animals from different herd numbers on the same farm once its done officially and correctly with the correct forms etc.

Another problem is that all cheques from marts and factories are made out to herd number owner

Yes you are right. However It’s less complicated and messy and less likely to come to the attention of department inspectors having one herd number per farm . Neighbours of mine have two herd numbers on one farm for two blocks of land and they are often getting inspected to make sure cattle are where they are supposed to be. They are haunted by them. For all intents and purposes the two blocks have to be two separate farms.

    He was talking about entitlements.
We missed the cut off date for this year.
I might ask him next year.
