Do you happen to know if certain older Sony Xperia devices such as the Z Ultra require a code, available from the network providers website, in order for the phone to read the Sim Card and for Internet and MMS to be downloaded. I am referring to Tesco Mobile in particular.
    Thank you.

It needs to be a Tesco SIM and if you're putting it into an older phone, what you typically do is phone their call centre and they can either send you the settings (for MMS and other data services) to receive into the phone, or they can e-mail you a link to the instructions on their website. It's worth having the exact make and model details at the ready before you call them.

You mentioned a code to 'read the SIM card' - is the phone locked to a different network? If not then if the account the SIM is registered to is in credit and the SIM is not on a black list, the phone should come active when you insert the SIM into it.

No, the phone is not locked to any network. Should a valid sim activate when inserted irrespective of the particular network settings - it being an unlocked device. Thanks for responding.

Yes, it should be good for for basic voice calls and SMS text messages without any special settings. By 'valid SIM' I asume you mean a SIM asociated with an active account - either a 'Pay as you Go' account which is in credit or a billpay phone that hasn't been cut off because you missed one or more payments.

In case there's a problem with the phone, can you try that SIM in a different phone?

Yes, that's what I meant. So the problem in this instance would appear to be a hardware issue with the Z Ultra. It's not "reading " the Sim to enable connection to a network although it is still detecting it's presence when it's inserted. The card itself works in another phone so there is no problem with it.
    Many thanks.
