Decking or other solution

    Hi All,

I've an elderly relative who is wheelchair bound. I want to raise their back yard so that they can wheel out in the sun. There can't be any slope/ramp as they can't manage that. The yard is only 10' x 12' & there is a 4" step at the back door. I was thinking of putting down a simple deck to raise the yard & bring it up level with the back door. Doesn't have to be anything fancy or expensive, just functional. Is a deck a good idea or are there other simple options. Don't want to raise it with concrete/readymix. Any other options.

Are you going to deck the whole yard or just the bit near the door? How will they be with the lip for the door?

Decking can be a very slippery surface, even the composite plastic deck becomes slippery over time if not regurlay maintained.

    Just something to consider.

Thanks for the replies. Planning to deck the whole yard with a slight rise to the lip at the door.
    Heard they get slippery ok.

    Thanks,

You will have planning issues if you cover the entire yard.
Also how will it deal with water run off?

As noted all decks are potentially lethal especially for older folk.
I have stapled light expanded metal onto softwood decks to make them slip proof.
    Not pretty but effective.
Chicked wire either but less effective.
Other idea is to is perforated rubber matting over the decking.
