The Good Lord Bird, Showime’s limited series starring Ethan Hawke as John Brown, the antebellum abolitionist who organized an ultimately ill-fated raid on the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry in 1859. It failed to initiate the slave rebellion Brown intended, but it helped to touch off the Civil War.

The project from Blumhouse Television is based on James McBride’s 2013 novel that won the National Book Award for Fiction. The Good Lord Bird is told as a memoir of Henry Shackleford aka “Little Onion” (Joshua Caleb Johnson), an slave who joins up with Brown during the tense Bleeding Kansas era — a time when the state was a battleground between pro- and anti-slavery forces – and eventually finds himself participating in his famous raid. Along the way, Onion has encounters with history and historical figures including Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.

Brown was convicted of treason and murder and hanged in December 1859

Fantastic series and a powerhouse of a performance from Ethan Hawke.

Watched the first 2 episodes last night, thought it was very good apart from Ethan Hawke, bit less of him and it would be perfect.

Thought episode 3 and 4 were boring compared to the first 2

Just started and hooked! Although if Hawke is gone for a few episodes, I'm not sure how they'll keep the levels up.

1: So far it feels like a really well told story. Get the feeling the Brown vs Reverand is gonna be the showdown it's leading to. Although, could be aiming to wherever Henry ends up.

2: Ah! Strong performances from Natasha Marc (Pie) and Crystal Lee Brown (Sibonia) and of course
the return of Hawke at the end!

3: Ah, a bit of the backstory for what kept Browns army going and some worldbuilding. So I get the feeling
Douglass stiffs him on money? Hardly betrays him.

Really excellent show. Surprised it hasn't got more notice to be honest.

    4: Good episode. Liked how
    Henry decided to stay.

Oh I think I see it now..
guessing Douglass doesn't turn up with support.. ouch.

    5: Well things
can't be good after this. I didn't see the possibility of Henry letting them down but it might be too late for him to get back with the password.

    6: Oh boy...
well it's all going downhill from here I'm guessing

Finished. Good series. Powerhouse of a performance from Hawke.

7: Very much a wrap up episode. (Onion) Joshua Caleb Johnsons emotional acting was performed well here Liked how
everyone was cool about Onion and how they did his get away.
