People before profit want the govt to take control of bewleys on Grafton street. Anyone know any other 'institution'/chipper that might need nationalising? I nominate 'Donegal's famous chipper' that closed a couple of months ago for a start

It's very easy to make suggestions when you don't have to follow through with them.

People Before Profit, they wanted to nationalise the air lines last week. What do Willie Walsh the pilot and Michael O'Leary know about airlines was the question posed by Paul Murphy (Rise/PB4P/Solidarity) last week

Thats like some hare brained idea Misery Guts Coppinger would come up with. Has she become Policy Officer for P.B.P.?

They should change their name to Losses B4 Profit.

You don't need to nationalise a building to take it into state care.

The National Trust does this sort of thing very successfully in the UK.

The actual running of the business is leased to a commercial entity.

An example is The Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast.

I actually think they should nationalise it, just to serve as a reminder of why things shouldn't be nationalised.

The likes of Dublin Bus, Irish rail etc get away with it because they are practically monopolies. Throw Bewleys in there with their €8 a coffee and the a €5 pastry to cover costs and folk will be taking their business elsewhere.

I thought this myself, nationalise it or just let it die. Subsidise someone to run the place, it's lovely inside, like one of the great Viennese or Budapest coffee houses. I'd hate to see Costa or someone take it over. Nationalise it please!

Is anyone surprised that they want something they don’t really need and that they can’t really afford and expect the taxpayer to pay for it anyway?

The tail wags that dog. That dog and its tail need a good root up the arse.

It depends on what value we put on things like old heritage buildings.
If we care enough we put the structures in place to conserve and protect them.
If not they are left to the vagaries of the commercial market and disappear.

It's ridiculous to nationalise it. For what purpose? Especially when another company will run something in its place at some point.

For a lot of people, it's not a very meaningful place anyway. It would be just a money drain if the state ran it

My friend and I went into Bewley’s less than a year ago to escape torrential rain and got two hot chocolates. It was tepid. Went to pay. €13. €13 for two hot chocolates. Checked the menu to make sure that it wasn’t a mistake and it wasn’t. Resolved then to never set foot in the place again. Absolutely shameless gouging. I know their rent was high but that’s not the way to win repeat custom.

I agree with the above poster that Bewley’s doesn’t mean much to most Irish people. Even Dubliners. It’s a convenient location and a nice building but the food has always been bogstandard and, well, the crazy prices are crazy. Maybe if they had focused on decent food at reasonable prices instead of trying to fleece tourists, they might have survived.

How about dealing with the real issue insane insurance and insane rents.

Morons I wouldn't vote for them ever. I'm not a right winger, I just don't see them being a party with any ability to get things done.

PBP frantic as ever to be noticed and "popular" in any way at all. Bewley's has gine bust about three times over the last 20 years. Must be the only coffee shop ever to fail to make money. Typical of them to expect Johnny Ronan or everyone else to pay for their populist fantasy. If dickhead Boyd Barret wants Bewleys open maybe he should pay for it himself. Of course he would have to get a real job and do actual real work. So no chance

There's no reason Costa couldnt buy it and maintain its present style as long as they want to pay top dollar for a Grafton st location. The tax payer is carrying enough passengers
