Keyboard not working fully

    Hello,

Question on a laptop I got from PC Specialist - had this one for a few years now.

The keyboard has stopped functioning correctly. For instance pressing num lock displays "yz".
Some characters output nothing, some output the correct character and some - such as Del displays "]".

I've removed the battery as I have read if it is overheated it can cause problems. Uninstalled and reinstalled the keyboard drivers. Searched for updates for the keyboard drivers. Tried to go back to a previous restore point (failed).

Any ideas as to what might have caused this - elderly parent was lat using this so I don't know what has happened. I have had problems getting it to turn on today. In the end I had to hold down on power button for approx 20s and then it powered off. I restarted it and have now encountered this problem.

    Any suggestions?

UPDATE: by using a USB keyboard and also a WiFi keyboard I am able to get full functionality back.
I'll open it up and see if there is a physical problem with the connection.

So I've removed the keyboard and I've cleaned the ribbon and the slot but the issue remains. It looks like the ribbon was loose and some coffee stains. The problem gets worse towards the top of the keyboard.
Shown in the attachments is what is output from the keys from to left to bottom right.

What is my next step here? This was sudden overnight failure.
I'm not sure if the issue is with the keyboard ribbon or in the slot. Both of which I've cleaned with contact cleaner.

find the keyboard part number / part identifier / search by laptop and try to find a complete replacement

they are usually not that expensive - should be able to find one on ebay for < 30 euro
