Retro 1990’s era bike. Contemplating giving it away for free rather than allowing it hit the skip. My second or possibly third ever bike. Still in working order but needs a but of TLC.

Just trying to gauge any interest in it? Thanks. Pics to follow.

I'd be interested. What kind of size is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 damncyclist

Depending on size I'd be interested in giving it a good home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 977 ✭✭✭8valve

Rather than registering interest, I'll commit to collecting it, once current travel restrictions are lifted.

I'm a bike restorer and always looking for new projects.

OK, something a little bit similar I've been meaning to offer for a while.

I'm not well up on old MTBs, but may suit one of the disappointed enthusiasts here.

    - Raleigh Yukon mountain bike, late 80s / early 90s.
    - Large frame size at a guess. Maybe a touch too big for me at 5'10" but - hard to tell given no front wheel.
    - Frame is ok - some rust - but all the bits need cleanup / work / replacement.
    - Doesn't have horizontal dropouts.

I took it from a skip and will just never get to doing anything with it. There are a couple of nice refurbs online if you search.

    - Covid compliant collection from Howth in Dublin, pretty much anytime.

    - Preference to someone who can collect soon (and precedent says a few decent IPA beers, I think! :pac:)

Any questions, just let me know.

based on my memories of raleigh frames of that vintage, that's a 23" frame.

might be worth seeing if the seatpost is seized, that might change whether people are interested or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭mazza

Thanks for the feedback (x2), MagicBastarder.

If someone's interested and et's me know, I'm happy to check out the seatpost movement. Bike's at the back of the garage, so its a bit of a pain!

My original plan was to make a single speed hack from it, so might suit someone after the same thing. I don't really have the knowledge of ease / difficulty of replacing parts on something of that era though.

Hopefully someone takes it, so its not "back to the skip"!

Don't send it to the skip anyway, if no one takes it I'll take it off your hands and do something with it. I have far to many random frames at the minute the missus thinks I'm opening a bike shop.

8valve may be interested? i notice he's not been online since you posted it. i'm out in glasnevin, so if he is interested, i could swing by and hold it for him till he can collect from me.

It's very easy to turn them into SS hacks. You just need some basic tools and s bit of knowledge and they can be brought back from the "dead", usually without spenind more than 100€, less than €50 if you're lucky.

Ha! The magic "s" word had the desired effect! ;-)

There's no mad rush, it's not something I'll do imminently. Hopefully someone wants it as I dont like throwing stuff out unnecessarily.

It's time and attention to research it, do it etc more than the money. And also, whether I'd actually use it.

    Thanks guys

I'm interested, but don't want to be greedy. If no-one else comes along in the next few days, like 8valve, etc, I'll take it. You're not in my 5km though, so it might be a bit of a wait til Phase 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭mazza

That's fine, Harry. Fair play and let's see if any other takers pop-up.

Sometime in week starting 24th May I'll be in either Phoenix Park or Ashtown area and could bring the bike. (Its beyond my 5km, but itll be for essential tasks and I'll have a letter).

Might put it in better range for yourself or someone else for collection.

That is extremely kind and generous of you to offer, thank you.

I'd be happy to bring it back to life if you can hold it till after the travel restrictions?

Good stuff, 8valve. Glad you have some use for it.

Magicbastarder: If you want to drop me a PM to arrange. Here most of the time or can leave it out, so whenever suits you best.

    Thanks guys

    PM sent, thank you!

we go to omni centre in santry occasionally, and there's a similar vintage (probably a couple of years older) raleigh locked to a bike stand there for over a year; same 501 frame, but has slowly lost its wheels and some other components. i've been half tempted to approach a security guard about it; but the frame is too big for me so i've no great yen for it.
    one of these, anyway: https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/retro-raleigh-montage-mountain-bike/1290189345

it's over beside the new pet shop between lidl and M&S - sure take a look as you're passing.
btw, i say glasnevin, but i live in the part that would have been called ballymun 50 years ago. ballynevin, we like to call it.

I know the bike, but I'm not touching anything up in Omni, the place can go from 0-100 real fast. There's a much better Giant frame down by the Centra on Swords Road (Across from Larkhill CU) if you're interested. TBH, I lifted a discarded frame before and it just frustrated me. I'm having better luck with the gifted Raleigh Amazon I'm working on now.
