Manhole covers front and back.

I want to get installed a decent patio covering most of the back garden. My house a Dublin 15 Semi-d is the end / start of a row of hoses and the sewage line passes through my back garden. I have 2 approx 600 x 600 manhole covers in the front garden and the same in the back garden.

I am 25 years here - was new build - apart from the first few weeks after installation, the pipes/ manholes have NEVER been used / raised / inspected. Anytime a fault occured it was always at the other end of the 15 houses..

My question is - am I obliged to make any provision for access to these?

I have no problem with access being provided - if the patio is re-instated correctly afterwards but I don't really want to go to the expense of the special manhole access covers with the patio blocks inserted. Any suggestions / comments welcomed.

I am planning to have the work done as soon as the restrictions are lifted along with ( different contractor ) some bathroom works..

So if anyone has any recommendations for good Garden and bathroom contractors that I could get quotes from ( forum rules permitting) that would be appreciated here or by PM>

    Eddie

Yes, you must place the metal boxes (recessed manhole covers) over them and the garden crew will lay the slabs into this box. The manholes needs to be accessible and readily lifted to clear blockages etc

    Example of boxes - https://recessedmanholecovers.co.uk/recessed-covers.html

    Hi Eddie,
We have the same and for 20 years never had anything done with the manholes, and had gone to the expense of the recessed manhole covers when getting paving done .
But in the last few years one of our neighbours has started throwing wipes down the loo and two summers in a row we have had to have the drains cleared etc as a result.
Also the council called in , to check and inspect them, and it would have been right pain , not to mention expense , if we didn't have proper manhole access.
You are obliged to keep them accessible to the council, even if they are on private property ,because the drain is shared .
