Cistern overflow pipe through outer wall

Decided to figure out what every hole in the back wall of my house was for, and there's one nearly metre long copper pipe that no other house has sticking out.

Was very easy to find it inside - its the cistern overflow pipe. It was clearly added when the bathroom was redone in the 1990s as its blown the pebble dash off the wall and been filled smooth.

I've never lived in a house with one of these poking out the wall before, that I've noticed. Do they normally go somewhere else - should it be in to the soil pipe?
