Upgrading from ASDL to eVDSL

Hey all, had a really interesting chat with an Eir technician today (outside of work), I was mentioning the poor speeds I was getting in my area. 12mb ASDL. 0.6 up.

He worked in the area I lived and said my estate should definitely be able to get eVDSL as he helped install it and that I should talk to my provider to be changed over to that node. He said its eVDSL.

When I run the checks on the coverage websites I only get the up to 24Mb stuff.

My question is, has anyone any experience of managing to get upgraded like this. Working from home, even a small boost to my download and upload speeds would help immensely.

I'm just concerned il get through to a rep for vodafone who will take a quick look at the usual website checker and say nothing available.

Did you try an online checker like on vodafone or eir website? If not, try someone like airwire or digiweb who are very good with individual cases like yours.

Yeah the online checkers tell me up to 24Mb. 15 on eir.

I'm going to try Vodafone support but I'm pretty sure it's all outsourced call centers so not expecting much. Might try airwire to see what they say. The Vdsl checker on their site says I can get it but last time I spoke to them they said I couldnt.

If i hadn't spoke to the engineer I'd hold out no hope but he said he was confident it's available to me, just depends on the companies being willing.

Is your home particularly old or in any way "strange"?

No it's actually one of the newer ones. Ethernet ports in every room etc.

Open https://fibrerollout.ie/rollout-map/ and find your location. Check what speed your nearest exchange reports. Is it up to 100Mb/s, etc.

So this is what it shows on the map when I use my Eircode. https://imgur.com/a/qjIFQNW

The cabinet in the left hand corner states 570 premises in this exchange can now access up to 100Mb/s fibre broadband. Estimated date for First Live FTTH with speeds up to 1000Mb/s is Autumn/Winter 2018.

When ive checked my eircode and and a few around the estate, its all the ****ty "up to 15Mb/s" stuff.

Is there a chance I'm on a different exchange? If so, how do I find that out?

You used to be able to check this online but I think these days you'll need to ring Eir tech support to confirm this.

So found out that it does look like there will be an upgrade to the estate and will be connected to a cabinet ~1km away. Ran my eircode through Airwires checker and it looks like the update happened last night for the estate.

A little disappointing though. Speeds called out on Airwires availability checker are saying Max 15Mb / 3Mb. This is such a minor upgrade on the ADSL speeds previously (Up to 15Mb / 0.6Mb)

I noticed some houses further up in the estate are now able to receive 30Mb / 8Mb

The houses that are getting those speeds are literally 100 meters away from mine and older houses too. In total from the cabinet I am 950M. Can anyone explain why the speeds available are so poor? Is the distance that much of a factor? Or is this more of a contingency to not have everyone on the top speeds to prevent congestion?

Even if the speeds dont improve, can I expect an improvement to ping or when more devices use the net at the same time it wont grind to a halt as much? Also is it just a reset of the modem to switch over or do you need to contact the ISP?

ADSL was optimised for distance (somewhat), VDSL2 is setup for speed. Its a tradeoff. Faster but shorter. Prequals are guesses so its possible your line would do better or worse than 15_3 by a bit.

Upload increases will help a bit when many devices are on. Upgrade isnt automatic, requires techs to come out and change you over at the cab and visit the house. In your case the cab is the exchange if he was correct about eVDSL.

With the distance calculator https://fibrerollout.ie/rollout-map/ is there anyway I can see exactly what the distance impact is?

As the crow flies it says im 600m from the cabinet but by following an actual walking route to the cabinet, Im 950m. Is there a way to find out how far exactly I am from the cabinet?

EDIT: Just found a useful breakdown here: https://www.comparebroadband.ie/how-does-fibre-broadband-work

I'd be happy with 24/8Mb - line checks so far are worrying though.

Those profiles aren't the ones OE are using here.

If you log into your router and find the downstream attenuation then that indicates your loop length to the exchange.

Had a look there - Loop Attenuation 23.5 dB

Need to point out I'm still on the ADSL connection. Is the cabinet still considered my exchange here (Does it act as the exchange for both ADSL and VDSL?) or is the only way to check this is once Im switched over?

    Thanks again for the help.

    Suggests 1.7km from exchange/cab

Could the exchange im on for ADSL differ to that of the Fibre Cabinet? 1.7km is almost doubling the distance I am from it.

    1.7 is now your max.
    eVDSL

You were the one that brought up eVDSL, e is exchange-launched. If its not eVDSL you could be closer. PM me your eircode and Ill query your cab number.

Yeah I was told it was eVDSL, sorry no idea what that means in terms of exchange. Wasn't sure if eVDSL is the same as regular VDSL/FTTC

    PM sent with eircode. Thanks!

OP is exchange launched alright. There is a closer cab but his road joins the main road closer to the exchange so would never have passed through it. Prequal confirms that.

15 and 12Mb (VDSL) prequals for houses nearby. Seems to be accurate. If I had to guess they're still using the more limited profile under the CLFMP but I thought Cush said that was abolished.
