Hi there just wanted to know if a 22R petrol engine would fit into my Toyota hilux 4x4 ? And how much work is involved in changing it ?? Thanks

Engine is one thing, gearbox/transfer case /diffs are another thing entirely.
I doubt the ratios would be a straightforward swap for most of the transmission but I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure they used the 22R in the Tacoma in the US market, which in that generation is essentially the same truck as the Hilux, Problem being many of them were only 2wd and sat on much lower suspension, so gearbox could be an issue as CJ mentioned. Very different rev range on a petrol

The only way to do it really would be to use the original hilux box with some sort of adapter plate or cut and weld the bellhousing.

But the question would be why?

Very few people will want a petrol hilux you'd be far better off keeping the 2.4 diesel or even swapping in a landcruiser or hilux surf engine.

The 5th generation Hilux (same as OP's) was sold as the "Toyota Pickup" in the US, this pre-dates the Tacoma which wasn't launched until '95. This "Pickup" was available with a 22R or 22R-E, but not the Tacoma (2.4 was a 2RZ-FE).

The 22R versions were available in 4WD in the US, no idea about transmission compatibility.
