Unless your GP offers MRI's during normal consultations its not covered.
Medical cards on the other hand are a different matter, your friend probably has the two confused.

If you paid, you had the MRI done as a private patient and medical card or GP card would not offset any of the cost.

If you are waiting for a "routine" MRI as a public patient, you would be waiting @18months.

Yes, this is a better answer than mine, thanks.
I had one done before (i also have a gp visit card) but it was private and covered by my health insurance. The standard charge was €200 though. I wouldn't want to be waiting 18 months for one unless it was something pretty minor.

The GP should also inform you of this information. You’re paying for the GP visit card in your tax.

Should have just deferred payment to be honest. Had an MRI in St Vincents Private Hospital back in March 2018 and didn't pay but they still did the scan. After 30 days, they sent the bill to a credit management agency. They chased me and my family until they stopped. Finally paid at the start of this year but heard they really couldn't have done anything as medical debts are not a criminal issue.

    Mod Note

Thank you for your post OP. While I appreciate your situation, your query isn't a personal issue as such. We left the thread open so that you could get some sort of a steer however. Hopefully you have that now, but if not you could go back to your GP, who might be able to explain the payment to you.

That being the case I'll close the thread now.

Thank you everyone for your help and replies.
