Hi. My neighbour has a Leylandi hedge and it is dying our side due to lack of sunlight. We've recently built an extension and am looking to plant a new Portuguese Laurel hedge our side. How far from his hedge should we plant? If we plant it too close could it cause issues?

Depending on the distances involved, its most likely that the roots from next door spread into your garden, so it will be more a matter of how close can you plant it. They are notorious for destroying the ground under them anyway, and if you start digging you are likely to find a lot of roots.

What kind of distances are you talking about? How far from the fence are would the Leylandii planted? Do the branches come over the fence, or reach as far as the fence? Very roughly the root spread would be about the same as the canopy.

Any issues will be the the money and effort you have wasted in trying to plant a hedge too close to Leylandii.

Edit, why is there lack of sunlight for the Leylandii? Would there not be a similar lack of sunlight for your hedge. Admittedly Portugese Laurel will grow in shade, but Leylandii is also ok in shade so maybe that isn't the reason for it dying. Was it cut severely back on your side?
