Planning on reseeding a field or 2. Don't know if I should do it now or wait till August. Also what's yer thoughts on direct seeding v ploughing and reseeding. Land is good dry land

Ploughing here this week field wouldn't have been touched in 40 years. Been giving it fym last few years drained it this spring and filled a load of hollows in it. Going with plough as field is rough.
Ive other fields here where the hybrids put in by previous owner are starting to look like they need replacement I'll just spray them off and get a run of powerharrow and seed.

I just disc 3 times then get a contractor with a power harrow and airseed hopper..it creates more tilth and helps levels out clumps too.
    Roll after.

Do you burn off the grass with roundup first?

Yes..leave it 3 or 4 weeks if u could not always possible..some lads don't bother discing and go straight in with harrow.
I just think it's too expensive not to go the whole hog.the more clay/ tillage the better.

If land is good discing will be sufficient. When spraying roundup/gysophate go with no more than 1.2-1.5L/acre. If there is a cover graze off sward as grass turns. Leave time for grass to die before discing. 2-3 runs of an independent spring disc will break up most fields. Use a frame chain harrow to level if needed. Spread seed use a slug pellet and a bag of granlime/acre even if pH is right. Then roll, roll and roll again.

Not a fan of direct seeding and ring rollers are not great from grass seed. Use slurry before discing if you have it.

With discing its better to have field fairly bare as you could end up with alot of fluff.ploughing around here is a waste of time as the amount of stones it brings up plus the fact there is no field that you can drop the plough and plough away as there 8s always a nub of rock everywhere
