Invalidity Pension

    Hi All,

I am currently on Illness Benefit and plan to apply for Invalidity Pension. The application looks fairly empty when looking for medical information. What should I include? I am thinking letters from specialists stating I am unfit for work for another year and conditions are ongoing as well as a personal summary of how my conditions impact me?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    That’s exactly what you want.

Thanks! I’ve read that they reject the majority of applications first time and are successful on appeal. What do you send in on appeal if you’ve sent everything relevant in your initial application?

For invalidity pension you need to show that you cannot do any category of work, including light work or sedentary work. Many applications are refused because the evidence provided does not specifically address this issue. Make sure that the evidence you have submitted clearly shows that are not able to do ANY category of work.

If you have been on Illness Benefit for one year or more already, you will have to show that you won't likely be able to work for the next 12 months following your application. If you have been on illness benefit for less than 1 year, then you have to show that you not likely work for the rest of your life, which can be difficult. If you have been on illness benefit for less than a year, you can of course apply now, but I would suggest waiting until the 12 months is up, or at the very submitting a second application after the 12 months is up.

Include as many specialist reports that you can get hold of. If you are undergoing any treatment that could reasonably expect to improve your condition, this can be used as a reason to refuse, so make sure that the doctor/specialist makes it clear that no sufficient recovery is expected within the required time frame.

Don't be surprised if your application is refused, and don't be afraid to appeal if you are knocked back.

Hi all. I have applied for Invalidity pension and I got a letter today telling me that I have an assessment by a Medical Assessor in November. It will be done by telephone. Can anybody tell me what to expect please? How long does the phone call usually last and what type of questions can I expect. I have a mental illness . Thanks for any help.
