Mice? Bats? Birds? Night time noises but not when raining

I've had a look at posts and sites talking about identifying sounds but I'd like some thoughts please.

Last few weeks there's been a faint scratching sound in the bedroom. House is 100 years old, refurbished and it's a dormer, hipped slate type roof so there's no attic as such, the bedrooms are in the roof with I imagine not much between the ceiling and roof.

It seems to happen around 12, when we go to bed, lights off like it's almost responsive to noise/light. Bang the ceiling and it stops for what seems the night. Raining at night and we don't hear it.

Any ideas? Would be a wooded area so was thinking bats or birds? If rodents should we be hearing them more consistently?

Wouldn't bats have left their roost by the time its dark so can probably rule them out. Mice or rats very possible and a birds nest in the eves is also possible.

If its good and dry in the roof put out some rat poison (mice will also eat it), use a proper bait box so the poison can't be moved around and check the bait box regularly to see if any has been eaten. I'd be surprised if any old house in woodland didn't have mice and or rats.

sounds like a mouse, when we moved in first we had the same, put a trap up and caught one in a few days

you wouldnt think a mouse would make that noise but they do

The most noise we ever had was mice and rats moving things around in the roof above the bedroom. I put out poison blocks and the rats rolled them around up and over the joists - scrabble scrabble scrabble ... plonk - went on for a few nights.

Cheers folks, issue is there's no attic or roofspace I can access to put traps or poison in. Wondering if it could be something in the guttering either.

I had a similar situation in a house that was similar to that.
Although I didn't have any access into the roof space there was a few gaps that were big enough for mice so I put bait boxes at each of these.
Also put bait boxes (not traps, they take too long to be effective) anywhere where you think they're accessing the roof space. They might live up there but they have to leave to eat and drink
