I'm expecting big price decreases from contractors due to the fall in diesel, transport & Plastic prices should also drop significantly.... Or are changes in oll prices only ever passed in one direction...

Doesn't new carbon tax on green diesel kick in this week? That should keep a floor a bit under contractor charges. Be of interest to see if proposed insurance rebates would extend to contractors; supposed less road traffic should make their travels somewhat less hazardous.

Around me it's more hazardous on the roads at the moment. A lot of people are out walking and cycling with children.

What are the rates contractors are charging in 2020. The charges the IFJ and FCI publish seem unrealistic in some categories

Start with Silage / fodder and reseeding

The carbon tax doesn't come close to the price fall an extra 6 euro for 1000 litres I think.... can someone correct me if i'm wrong...

I would't complain if they didn't drop at all, contracting is a tough gig these days and I wouldn't begrudge them the chance of making a few quid for a change .

How much of a reduction do you think would be fair?

Does that price include vat and you draw them in yourself?
    Seems very reasonable.

For lads paying out the gate our within 30 days taking cuts in early may anything over 100 euro a acre would be very saucy where a long draw isnt involved

Paid less than 100 last year. Wouldn’t fall out with them this year if it was still the same price.

I'd have no issue on negotiating price if I was paid going out the gate. The price of diesel, plastic and netting is back but it doesn't mean I'll be knocking €2/3 off the bale if have to carry the cost for a number of months with no interest.

The problem with most contractors is it is impossible to get a bill off them ,they rather get a big ball of money together then being paid going out the gate .and they still will have the poor mouth!!!

    +1000

I use two local lads here (like to give both a turn)

Two years ago one fella gave me no bill at all. Asked him about 5 times and then it ended up running into two years which is not good .....for me.

Aren't the FCI all over Agriland and the FJ this week whinging about the carbon tax and how the cost will have to be passed onto farmers. To be fair, they've been on about it since the budget but am surprised they are still with diesel prices through the floor

Same as. I like to clear annually at least, but I have a pain in my hole chasing guys. I haven't a big cash flow so don't want big "wads" of cash going out. Some guys I have dropped in the past for this very reason.

Lads, tell any of them you meet in the near future, tis a great year to be a agricultural contractor. diesel prices on the floor, light 1st cuts of silage on the way and queues of lads forming at entrances looking to work for them, so they can pay even poorer wages.

still i know we are blessed with them round here prepared to invest in machinery for a few weeks work and often wait on payment.

Last year diesel was dear, the weather left my silage a week late so there was a monster crop, about 40-50% extra in the pit compared to the previous year. My contractor arrived for payment and never looked one cent extra despite the extra cost on him.
This year diesel is cheap and my first cut will be not much with half of last years as I am gone milking and have to cut for quality so it will be earlier. I think after last year and him not whinging that this year I won't either. Everyone has to win sometimes.

I'm not a contractor, but when I see what it costs to keep my few ould tractors together, not to mind finding Labour. I would not be arguing if the contractor has a good year. Plus it hasn't started yet. We don't know what the weather will be like for silage. It's fierce pressure for a few months. I hope they have a great year

Contractors are having a good year this year plenty drivers about a lot of them on the covid payment and they just topping there wages low diesel prices, fine weather. I wouldn't begrudge them a good year they had plenty bad ones.

Only downside for them is crops are well back on average. I've seen meadows cut with less than 6 bales/acre. I can't see that paying for the contractor

Baler men love broken wet weather, with lots of nice soggy bales at 10 plus bales to the acre, they made a solid fortune last year, sfp outfits this weather suits them to the ground alright

No 10+ bales to the acre around here this year. Closer to 6 bales max

There’s no fortune to be made out of any form of contracting. And definitely not when contractors are still going around 12 months later trying to collect last years money.
