Got a tax refund via cheque but I actually want it via bank transfer

I got a tax refund via cheque but I actually want it via bank transfer because where I live cheques are not used anymore. Also before being discontinued lodging a cheque was very expensive (50-70 euro depending on the bank).

Is there a way I can get revenue to void cheque and transfer money electronically?

I provided my accountant my bank account details but I think she forgot to update them in ROS, is there anything she can do?

I just checked myAccount details on the Revenue website and my updated bank accounts are there but probably the system is not the same as ROS?

    Thank you for your help!

Return the cheque and request it to be cancelled with a reason via letter. Provide your bank details.
Send contact through my enquiries advising that you have returned the cheque.
Probably won't be dealt with very quickly in the current crisis.
Cheques can be lodged in a bank without seeing a real person. Not sure if banks are open though

Very painful process just because someone forgot to notify Revenue with my account coordinates...I should deduct my wasted time from accountant's bill...

As I said I cannot lodge cheques here, they have been discontinued as mean of payment...I am not in IRL

You could have set your account details up with Revenue yourself

No, I am paying an accountant, I e-mailed her asking to provide my bank account to Revenue as she did last year so why should I do that myself?

So that you are sure it will be done and you’ll get the money in your account?
It’s also possible that it’s not her fault.
Once revenue have your bank details, they don’t lose them
Could be that a trainee pushed the wrong button because Experienced revenue staff have been deployed elsewhere in these trying times.

If your accountant set it up last year via Ros it stays there. Maybe get on to your accountant

Also cheques do not cost 50 to 70 euro to cash. 50 cent maybe

He’s not in Ireland and maybe not in eurozone. If he’s getting a large rebate, the exchange rate and other bank charges wherever he is could be steep. Or else he made a mistake, a typo .

I've changed bank account from an Irish one to a non-Irish one. Do you think I am so silly to not be able to deal with this things?

Story is: I gave mandate to an accountant to file my IT return, asked explicitly via e-mail to amend my bank account details and that didn't happen so Revenue send a cheque and now it is not possible to lodge in the country I live.

So in my view all this hassle I am in now it's accountant's fault .

So please, instead of assuming that you have someone dumb on the other side of your computer screen just stick to answering the questions if you'd like to help. If not just ignore my thread and happy days...

That is what I will check today, but I know who I am dealing with and unfortunately the trainee could be on the accountant side...it's a big firm so these more standard tasks are usually dealt by trainees...will see.

Having read the reply you received I'd bet you are wondering why did I bother!!!

When I read the query I was going to post a reply quite similar to the one posted.I then read your reply in which you never thanked the poster for taking time to reply but instead complained that the course of action would take too much effort.

If I had replied and received your answer my initial thought would have been why did I bother.

You are correct, I did not explicitly thanked the poster but I did not complained about his reply as well but rather on the service I received from the accountant I have hired for doing something I now have to act myself to fix their negligence.

So don't see the problem here tbh. I reply to so many people providing them help for issues they have and don't receive a thank either.

Because it's ultimately your responsibility and if you had done so you wouldn't be in this situation now.

Can you post the cheque to your accountant and get them to lodge to your ROI account given it sounds like their mistake.

Failing that can you post directly to your bank here with a lodgement slip?

Depending on your bank they may have details on their website like this, or ask them on twitter.

To be honest I'm wondering why you're on here instead of going straight to your accountant. As you said, you're paying them to do the work.

Just remember your tax return and related matters are your responsibility. For example, if your accountant made a mistake on your return and in some future date the revenue contacts you with a bill and some penalty charge you can't say it's your accountants fault, it will be seen as your issue to resolve.
As for the cheque, send this to your accountant and say you want that put into your bank, either by revenue or cheque lodgement for no charge from your accountant, is that not the very obvious solution.

I am indeed, what makes you think I am not? But better to be prepared, isn't it?

I got the impression he was in Holland. Isn’t it SEPA?
I did however see on a letter from DEASP a list of reasons why the Covid payment was rejected. One of them was because the account provided was not an Irish account. I thought everyone was obliged to accept any SEPA account. There are lots of young people in Ireland with Revolut and other virtual accounts. (Sorry, slightly off topic)
When I have a moment I must check with revenue about what garit said, unless garit knows for sure?

    How old are you OP?

Shooting down peoples help being posted, why did you even bother asking if you know it all?

I knew you are not here, that's why I said post your Revenue cheque to your accountant for lodging or post your cheque to a branch in Ireland for lodgement. Either can be done from abroad.

I don't care about your response to this you rude ****er.

Revenue request a SEPA bank account for payment as reported on letters I got together with cheque.

FYI - in cases like mine, no need to send cheque back to Revenue, the Accountant General office can cancel cheques and proceed with refund via bank transfer.
