Was onto local merchant today looking for some field gates, ideally I wanted the gates with the extra bars in them to keep lambs in, but they didnt have them in stock and dont know how long it will be before they have them back in giving the current crisis. The next option they had was half mesh gates but these were over 70 euro dearer than just the standard gates. Would it work out cheaper to buy the standard gate and some sheets of mesh onto them myself, surely it wouldnt cost that much?

Do you mean weld? Will destroy the galvinize coating unless you want to get them dipped again.

I used bind sheep wire with light electric wire onto the gate facing the road

Or else use just a wire gap of sheep wire, with a post in middle for stability between fields/paddocks......keep.the extra money spent on mesh for beerz, when this lockdown over

If your land is joining a road I would definitely go with them regardless of cost.

If your bounds near the road is well fenced with sheep wire and you are have 'normal' gates these are vulnerable to stray dogs getting into worry sheep. I feel alot safer that mine have mesh.

The gates will be used for both a handling yard, need to be able to keep lambs in and as field gates

Same here, I had a few rolls of used 2' and 3' light sheep wire and cut them to the length of the gate, wrapped the ends of the wire around the frame of the gate and cable tied the wire to the gate. Once the lambs get big enough, I removed the wire to stop tags getting caught in them. Roll and store for next year.

Fox Bros are still open and manufacturing them, they are one of the main manufacturers as well as Gibney steel. I was asking them for off spec 5 and 6ft high mesh gates last week and they said 2 weeks to manufacture them, or stock items of normal height qod be delivered within a few days at the moment. If your in Meath/North Dub area Whytes Agri in Lusk had a few mesh Fox Bros gates in the yard last week ...I think they were about 11 or 12 ft wide.

You can’t dip again , unless you fully strip all galvanise

Wasn't really suggesting he should just that welding mesh on himself might not have the big saving he is looking for if the gates life expectancy is severely compromised.

Also welding onto galvanize is not a fun task to start with.

A good steel or iron mongor should have it,or any local fabrication firm would get it for you

Might just go with the idea of tying the mesh onto the gates of the handling yard while the lambs are small and then remove them when not required

I put mesh on gates here in the yard few years ago. Got a heavy duty gate and the mesh sheets. Attached it to the gate using metal strapping and tec screws. Mighty job

If u use some 1inch flat as runner bars u can buy it galvanised in some places , pre drill it and tec screw it direct on to the gate , no welding and safe out

The boys from buffalo gates have them. They are a great job. They are dear but only the day you buy them. I hate messing like tying bits to gates especially around a house.

They have stopped making the 9 bar gates, trying to clear old stock as they weren't selling but haven't sizes available that i require, they're would be the ideal job for what I need

+1 to this. No messing around once bought and installed. Also, the half mesh seems to be much better fabricated onto the gate then anything you could do yourself.

I tried to buy a powerbox and bale lifter direct 10 years ago and they wont let me

They had a crush for sale on done deal 3 years ago and when your man said he was gibneys I told him I wasn't interested and bought elsewhere

They can fxck off if they are going to cherry pick when they will sell direct and not
