Controversial maybe but do Revenue not treat NI as UK for VRT purposes?

Can he not just make out a receipt to say it was bought up there by you on x date? Plenty of English registered cars would be imported by NIRL dealers and sold to buyers down here.

Last two cars I bought up North were on UK plates. There's no issue once you have the V5 and the receipt of when you bought it.When and how it got to NI is irrelevant for VRT. Both V5s had UK addresses.

How recent was it when you vrt them? Just on the website need evidence when car entered the country? Have receipt to say he sold me the car.

Usually the date on the receipt is what they use. Was there a delay between purchase and delivery?

No it was purchased Thursday and arrived Tuesday. Part of me thinks address hr staying at was not his house.

You have 7 days to make a VRT appointment . Just do it online today although you won't be getting assessed anytime soon.
Once you have a receipt and the V5 the rest is of no consequence.
Hopefully you won't get badly stung on the VRT/Nox.

This happened to me just over a year ago, the car was for sale in the North, but was in from the UK with 2-3 months.

The person doing the VRT said they cant change whats coming up on the system. Apparently they could find out when it came over from the UK on the ferry, because thats when I had to pay the fine from.

I had to pay the late penalty and appeal it outlining the North is still part of the UK and I got the money back.

    My letter literally said

"I purchased XYZ car from Northern Ireland, Last time I checked the North was still part of the UK. Please see copy of invoice enclosed and refund me."

Also no VRT bookings available at the minute. Ive a commercial vehicle on NI plates with 6 weeks, my insurance extended my 30 day cover when I rang them.

How much was the late plenty, I believe the car has been in the country awhile cause I know he been in the country good while but the mot done in march said was done in london 🀷ðŸ¼*♀️. I've insured the car yesterday when it arrived cause I need a run around for 2 weeks regards work. I'm just very worried they wont vrt cause cant proof when came in. I can get a receipt from transport guy that collected it from derry and dropped to me if this is any help. Cant make vrt appointments I have tried and tried to ring them.

The VRT was around 2.5k and I think the fine was something small like €120-170.
The fine works of a % and goes up daily. the amount if goes up by is very small.

Get an invoice from the seller and the transport company. It's probably easier to pay the fine if there is one and appeal it after. I dont think we had another option.

Have you considered the Nox charge on the car?

Will he be giving you the v5 as it's crazy you purchased it without even at least seeing it.....

720 is the vrt and nox is 150 for it. They can't refuse to vrt though can they? I have the invoice from seller and transport company emailing me one over today. Its upsetting a bit cause after buying the car like 😓

Does the car still have uk road tax? If you can’t provide proof of entry into the state then they will assume it entered the state on the day the road tax expired in the uk. So if it expired a month ago and your appointment was today you’d pay 30 days late penalties. If it still has road tax you should be okay. Also if your worried just book a ferry from UK to NI using the cars reg plate. I’ve bought UK cars from NI without proof of entry but this was from a garage, I’ve been told private sale is different

Edit: If you purchase a ferry ticket you’d need a new invoice with a date in the future. Is there a date on the invoice?

Tax in the UK doesn’t transfer between owners anymore.

bull**** .. you dont need proof of entry into the state if you have plausible evidence of purchase in the north .. normally the sales invoice.

done it 3 times with UK plates and NEVER got challenged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,706 ✭✭✭User1998

    So lets say:

You have no proof of entry
    VRT is €850
And they tell you that the car has been in the country since 1st October (the day the tax expired)

    The late penalty is

Vrt x 0.1% x Amount of days late

    €850 x 0.1% x 210 days

    = €178

So worst case scenario your paying €180 in late fees. I think there’s another €100 charge on top of that the day it becomes 30 days late but I’m not sure.

So if I were you I’d stop worrying and just pay the late penalty (if there even is any). You could appeal it like others have done and say that N.I is a part of the U.K

Doesn’t matter. The day the tax expires is the day they assume it entered the country if you have no proof of entry

So have I but not with a private sale, I’ve been told its more strict for private sales but I could be wrong

dealers in the north will hold UK plated cars for a few months with private plates un-taxed.

Yet I have first hand experience of it.. so obviously not bull****!

    Although it should be bull****

Yes but thats buying from dealers in N.I which don’t need proof of entry for. If you bought a car in the UK and had no proof of entry they assume it entered the country on the day the uk tax expired (It’s happened to me before). The same might apply to private sales from N.I but I’m not sure.

From what you have said you bought the car last Thursday, you have a receipt and the V5. You have I assume a delivery manifest from the transport company for yesterday. So again just go online book an appointment and keep the receipt and the delivery note.
You have 7 days from when the vehicle is brought into the state. If the delivery manifest states when and where the vehicle was picked up from and delivered to that starts the 7 day clock. You will not be subject to fines.
When you do get an appointment have proof of your home address a utility bill , proof of your PPSN tax credit form from Revenue for example and enough funds on a credit or debit card to pay the VRT/Nox.

A friend won a car recently off raffle page recently and wants to vrt it but the raffle page did not own the car. Checks are done on the car and it's not stolen. It's in lads name in uk. So he wondering what can he use as proof of purchase and does anyone know anyone that was vrted their raffle car.

They will have the v5 or should and if not then it must be got in full from the owner.
Receipt from raffle and date etc should be enough, obviously if cars are purchased up north then there would be no boat booked so they have to be open to one driving over the boarder.

Thats normal, they are traders so they don’t sign the logbook. He will have to get some sort of invoice off them, or make up an invoice himself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭kingsofoffaly

He has full v5 there but there is no sales invoice from raffle company for the car except the email to say his that he purchased a number for 16 pounds and a screenshot of the post on Facebook where it went live that he won.

They won’t accept that they need something that says X person bought X car from X person on X date for X amount of money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

Print out a receipt with the sale/win, date, signed and purchase price or as in this case ticket price.

They're not interested if the car was free or €100k as all they want is the bumped up tax and getting off you.
