Iron in the water supply

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on what I should do about iron in my water supply.
I noticed a while back that there is a layer of brown sludge in the toilet cisterns, and a brown stain down the toilet bowl where overflow water tends to trickle down. If I clean the stain it is back within a day.
I figured there is maybe some iron in the tank in the attic, I have been meaning go up and check the state of the tank for a while but not got round to it.

Lately I have noticed the problem is also in the tap water coming directly from the mains...I can see brown stains on my water jug, the water is slightly tinted brown some mornings and this morning I noticed a brown ring on the saucepan after I boiled an egg.

Is there anything I can do to address the issue if it is coming in from the mains? will this clog up my plumbing over time? any opinions on how I should address this?

    Thanks
