The young lad asked me this earlier and I thought it was a good one . What kinda tractor would you use for a long cross country journey with a few similar tests like you would see on Top Gear ?
There's no rules set in stone but vintage would be interesting .
I said a Zetor 8045 . I don't know why as I never drove one but I always thought they were a yoke that would stick it out in any conditions , good enough cab with a heater and it's own compressor .

Excellent traction for field work, gutsy enough to have a go at tasks that would normally require upwards of 160hp be that drawbar or pto work (they're good for up on 150 with a bit of a screw), pretty economical on fuel, not overly cumbersome and a nice enough cab.

    JD 3650
Not as old as ye're choices. Late 80s
But what a comfortable, easy to manage tractor.
    Shifted gears so well mmmmmmm
Early ones were so much nicer than the Fords and Masseys at the time.

I actually preferred the 2850 due to the pure manouverability but prob a bit small.

Massey 135.. Goes forever never let you down and like the land cruiser a few years back on top gear I bet you couldn't kill it.

They did do a tractor episode where they had various challenges. Of course they picked MONSTER machines and failed.

One of my son's has been looking at loads of backdated Topgear episodes since lockdown and he finds them hilarious and he's dragged us all in to looking at them and they're mildly amusing and acceptable for viewing, one of the only ones we'll all watch together.

But your son is on to something without a doubt. He's a clever boy, tractors are the ultimate off road machine when it comes to floods, snows and other catastrophes as we've all to often seen on the news in Ireland and their (and their owners) adaptability seems to know no horizons!!

Clarkson picked a JCB Fastrac 8250 for speed,
and the others went for a Case STX Steiger 530 and a Fendt 930 Vario.

One of them looked like a military tactical unit with caterpillar tracks!!

Bullocks (great name) needs to get his son to write to the Grand Tour and Top Gear producers with his suggestion. It's a really really good idea that hasn't been done by either crews that have saturated the auto industry "challenge" space. They've literally done everything from military, water, hovercraft, amphibious, electric, sports, muscle, daily, van, truck and two wheeled.

Regular tractors have not been done.

I'd have to bring off a Case 1455, I always had a liking for them. I drove one before, terrible machine to operate or drive but their some brute of a machine. If I wanted to bring something reliable I'd bring off my 1394 DB. Never missed a beat and is comfortable to drive.
