Are there any species of fly in Ireland which are nocturnal?

Just wondering, because there's been times when I would leave my bedroom window open a crack on a calm winter's evening, thinking not too much would be flying about outside.

But on a couple of occasions, this brought in an insect visitor. Not a moth, like I'd expect, but something that looked very akin to a housefly to my eyes, but not with the same behaviour. Firstly, they were out on a Winter's night, and they tended to fly along the roof of the room and occasionally down near the lamp. Attraction to light is not a characteristic that I know of the common fly.

Just wondering if ye know of any species of fly which fit this bill - active on winter nights, attracted to light and has roughly the same appearance (to the naked eye) as a house fly.

Daddy Long Legs AKA Crane Fly.

Sometimes get hundreds of them in the Kitchen at night if someone leaves the back door open.

Edit: Sorry, I posted that before I read all your post.
