Hi, I'm looking to buy a lowish-end gaming laptop for my son. Max budget 1000. He's mainly playing Minecraft and Fortnite atm but growing up quick!

Thinking of the Lenovo IdeaPad-L340 Gaming Laptop

    https://www.lenovo.com/ie/en/laptops/ideapad/l-series/IdeaPad-L340-15IRH-Gaming/p/88IPL301161

but with my own specs. Caught between 2 choices. Main differences are processors and the hard drive setups ...

    € 1,019.99
    • Processor : Intel Core i7-9750H Processor (2.60GHz, up to 4.50GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 Cores, 12MB Cache)
    • Operating System : Windows 10 Home 64
    • Selectable Memory : 16GB DDR4 2400MHz SoDIMM
    • First Hard Drive : None
    • Second Hard Drive : 1TB Solid State Drive, M.2 2280, PCIe-NVMe, TLC
    • Display : 15.6" FHD (1920x1080), IPS, 250nits, Anti-glare, No touch
    • Graphic Card : NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650 4GB GDDR5
    • Camera : 720P HD Camera with Dual Mic
    • Chipset : HM370
    • Battery : 3 Cell Li-Polymer Internal Battery, 45Wh
    • Power Adapter : 135W AC Adapter (3pin)-UK
    • WiFi Wireless LAN Adapters : Wireless 1x1 AC, Bluetooth Version 4.1 or above
    • Warranty : 1 Year Depot or Carry-in

    € 829.99
    • Processor : Intel Core i5-9300H Processor (2.40GHz, up to 4.10GHz with Turbo Boost, 4 Cores, 8MB Cache)
    • Operating System : Windows 10 Home 64
    • Selectable Memory : 16GB DDR4 2400MHz SoDIMM
    • First Hard Drive : 1TB Hard Drive, 5400RPM, 2.5", 7mm
    • Second Hard Drive : 256GB Solid State Drive,M.2 2242, NVMe,TLC
    • Display : 15.6" FHD (1920x1080), TN, 220nits, Anti-glare, No touch
    • Graphic Card : NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650 4GB GDDR5
    • Camera : 720P HD Camera with Dual Mic
    • Chipset : HM370
    • Battery : 3 Cell Li-Polymer Internal Battery, 45Wh
    • Power Adapter : 135W AC Adapter (3pin)-UK
    • WiFi Wireless LAN Adapters : Wireless 1x1 AC, Bluetooth Version 4.1 or above
    • Warranty : 1 Year Depot or Carry-in

Considering the price difference, any advice on the i5/i7 and drives options? Or any other suggestions for laptop with those specs and money? Should have a 100 Lenovo voucher to bring prices down further.

    Appreciate any advice!!

the Msi GF65 is coming out quite soon in May with 9750h and RTX 2060 card

it will be £999 (that's 100 over your budget but because the RTX 2060 card is so far ahead of the 1650 card it will mean the machine remaining "gaming relevant" for years longer especially due to DLSS 2.0 (offers extra fps) and Ray-tracing(better graphics) )

it also has quite a decent design and a high refresh 120Hz screen.

it's the best deal in gaming laptops imo

if that's not of interest look up reviews of the ones that you're considering. specs don't tell the whole story e.g. is there significant thermal throttling or a really terrible screen?

Thanks a lot for that glasso, Ill bear it in mind.

    I found this ...

    https://www.komplett.ie/asus-tuf-gaming-fx506ii-al059t/80056006/product/9645

Looks good to me with the new chip and decent gpu. But not sure what machine it is, is it the A15? It doesn't have speakers for example. Is it mutton dressed as lamb?

This looks almost identical but bigger storage, monitor looks better?? and has speakers, for an extra 200 ...

    Cheers

the amd 4000 cpus won't see a huge benefit in gaming laptops from a gaming pt of view unless paired with the really expensive graphics cards e.g. 2080 laptop card as the gpu will be the limiting factor

there are tests with say 9750h and amd 4000 and same graphics card in mid range e.g. 1660ti and the difference was small ~5%

I would really push for the RTX-capable cards now, mainly due to the recent development of DLSS 2.0, on the assumption that "going fwd" many games will have it.

50% fps increases not to be sniffed at!

basically in that price range of €1000/ €1100 I wouldn't buy a non-RTX card-equipped gaming laptop as the advantages for them are stacking up.

Do you think the new 4000 cpu laptops that will be coming out will drive existing prices down in the short-term?

well they already have to an extent but don't see a decent laptop with a full 2060 card going any cheaper than 999£

    that would have been 1200£ 6 months ago and with a 4-core i5 instead of a 6-core i7 9750h

the amd cpus aren't gonig to affect the gpu part of the laptop tho.
