Car won't go into gear!

    Hey Folks.

Have a 2012 Ford Mondeo. no major issues with it previously and it last have a minor service in Jan. It was due for the NCT a few weeks ago but overall has been fine. Approx 150k on the clock.

I drove it last week and noticed the gears were harder than usual to go into. Just a little more effort was required to get them in which was unusual. I put it down to the car not being driven as much recently.

However now the car will not go into any gear when I press the clutch. Its like I'm not pressing the clutch as the gear stick will not move into the correct position.
However, when the car is turned off, I can move the gear stick as normal.

I haven't noticed any leakages and I am guessing its not a good sign if it does work when the car is powered off !

Anybody any ideas or suggestions . I am not technical when it comes to cars unfortunately.

I am wondering if this is likely to be a big Job or something small ? I fear its the former.

    Any guidance here is appreciated.

    Thanks

It suggests there's something wrong with the clutch or hydraulics (and not the gearbox), as you don't need the clutch to select gears when the engine's not running.

    Thanks for that.

Best course to get someone out to look at it you reckon ?

Or is it there more little tests I can do .

BTW is that Sly Rax in your picture ?

Check your insurance for recovery truck on policy and have it brought to an open service place of your choosing

Some external checks you can do if it’s a hydraulic problem. Firstly check the fluid level, then get down in the footwell and see is there any dampness around the clutch pedal especially up at the top which would indicate a failing master cylinder. Unfortunately the slave cylinder is inside the bellhousing on the mondeo so a lot of fluid would need to leak from it before you’ll see it outside. If you can’t see anything obvious it’s looking like a collapsed clutch pressure plate and you will need a new clutch.

If you not technical nor in a position to fix it yourself that what is the point of doing further checks?

At the end of the day the clutch or the hydraulics are gone.

Just ring around local garages and see if any of them can help you. Then call the breakdown assist and have them bring it there.

do alot of these in the old place and I can tell you for sure your going to end up putting a 3 piece clutch kit and a flywheel and also a new slave cylinder. this is ur best bet at that mileage your car is due for the flywheel and clutch to be replaced. also it's a expensive job being honest and yo do the job as far as clutches go it's a dirty one to do.

It could be the gear linkages need lubricating. Switch on the ignition and just leave the engine warm up fully before attempting to engage gear. See if there is any difference.

    No..

It moves in and out of gear while the engine is off and won't when the engine is running. That's a clutch problem.

I've never seen hear linkages to bed lubrication because they won't shift gear

    Your clutch. The pressure plate.

Don’t suppose you might have a ball park figure of what I could expect to pay ?

    €500

    €500

Not a prayer at 500 euro. The parts alone will be more than that.

If it's the whole 3 piece clutch and fly wheel.

The part will be 600 to 750 depending on brand.
Labour is trick on that job.

Total spend is over a grand.

Is it a dual mass flywheel? If not then no real benefit to changing it.

    €500

LOL, OP, don't listen to this! You should budget for double that amount at least. Some people like to type stuff without considering whether or not they are helping or hindering the OP or not and i really don't understand what motivates them.

Check your brake/clutch fluid reservoir.that will tell you if you have a leak.

Why should we trust you more than him? You don't have a source = guessing.

Well I got a clutch changed in my Almera for I think €150 but obviously I know a Mondeo is a bigger diesel car so I knew it would be more expensive so I hazarded a guess at it that it would be around €500. I'm surprised that it would cost €1000 for a clutch.

You might get away a bit cheaper if you replace the DMF with a conventional flywheel. The DMF doesn't confer any significant real world practical benefit.

I just put a new clutch in a 2013 ford mondeo 1.6 diesel.full kit cost €208.i got it on micksgarage.

I don't know where coolbeans is getting clutches. Perhaps those are main stealer prices?

OPs car is a 2012. Main dealer parts on a car of that age would be a wasteful extravagance. For older cars that are not worth much anyway, spurious parts are the way to go.

What makes the mondeo so awkward.
Ideally a family saloon should be alittle easier to maintain than that.
1000 quid clutch jobs are a disaster really. I know the dmf is alot of the cost but still.
