If someone is in receipt of Illness Benefit and is made redundant from their job do they lose their payment? This is a long term (several months) illness. If they aren't fit to seek work then what do they claim?

If you meet all the criteria for redundancy when you are on sick leave then your redundancy will be calculated using only the first 6 months of your sick leave.
So for example if you have been employed somewhere for 8 years but you have been on sick leave for 1 year then your statutory redundancy payment will be based on 7 and 1/2 years service, not 8 years.
So it will be 2 weeks gross wages (limit is €600 per week) X 7.5 years with 1 week added on. So, 16 weeks wages.
For the second part of your question, even if you are no longer employed, either through redundancy or because you resigned or you were sacked, if you have enough PRSI and the GP continues to certify you as unfit for work then you can continue to get illness benefit for a max of 2 years.
Being employed is not in fact a condition of being eligible for Illness benefit.
