Sheltered patio - ideas

    Hi all
We are thinking about starting to do a patio area at our house. However our garden is very open and is on a height so we'd really need to try and shelter it some how.
Outside our patio door (photo 1) doesn't really get the sun from noon onwards so we'd be hoping to put a nice area on the grass (photo 2)
Can any of you suggest ideas for us that would help shelter a patio area. As you can see it would be very open from all sides so we will definitely need something.
I'm hoping to do something that doesn't cost an absolute fortune, so we'd be very grateful for any suggestions or ideas at all.
    Thanks in advance

    Very creative use of sleepers!

We did similar with a combination of blocks & sleepers, I will take a photo tomorrow and upload it. We are surrounded by either dairy grazing fields or silage fields. A laurel hedge is also a must around the boundary.

Could you build a small 2 ft wall on 3 sides of you patio. Then insert some glass panels inside the area. You could plant around the paved area to help it blend into the surroundings. The panels dismantle and can be stored in winter. We have a corridor of wind behind our house but the panels are brilliant for us.

Ours was a exposed site on a couple of acres of ex silage land. We created a smaller .5 acre garden and enclosed it with mixed hedge and random raised beds. Its also very windy so the 2nd photo shows the windbreak, a mix of laurel and other hedge in layers. The patio we went with printed concrete that extended beyond the walls for sunlight and after 4 years we still love it and it was half the price of slabs. Raised beds all around create an illusion of being slightly sunk and a block built semi circle wall helps again with the wind and privacy.

Forgive the mess, with the nice weather and the kids at home its getting some abuse at the moment.
