Where do I start?

We have a kitchen/dining/utility area that we would like to open up and get more light into the house and make a more family friendly area. It will involve quite a lot of construction work and we’d like to get a different view on what we could do. Where do I start? Who is it that I should be looking for? Is it an architect, or a designer or an engineer? Not sure where the line finishes and starts for each of these

For these reasons alone you should start with an architect.

Ask around to your family and friends to try to find someone who has had similar work done in the recent past, and contact them to ask about their professional, the prices, processes etc

    Well done, you already started!
DIY sketches, ask family/friends for opinions.
Figure financial scale, 50k, 100k etc.
Any neighbours done similar? Google streetview and Skyview is your friend.
Visit Houss.com for ideas, save bits, ideas you (both?) like etc.
Build a portfolio, don't run to the architect/designer just yet.
