how to find leak in heating system

I think I have a leak in the heating system.

I have tied up the ball cock in the small tank and the amount of water has decreased.

I worked out that I am losing 2cm of water every day , about 1.5 litres to 2 litres of water per day.

This leak could have being going on for more than two years as I only discovered it when I got a plumber to bleed a radiator and the radiator continuosly needed to be bleed which indicated a leak.

1.How can I find the leak? Its only losing about a couple of millimetre every minute but how can I find it.

    2. If I untie the ball cock and let the water replace itself what could happen?

    3. Are there any good companies or plumbers that could find it and that you could recommend.

    4. Is there any good leak sealers that I could put into the tank?

5 If I need to and if I find that the heating system is not in great condition, how much would it cost to replace the system.
I dont think that the heating system overall is in great condition. How much would it cost?

Tec7 leak sealer is very effective.

I tried that already and it worked for a while.

Is there any other solutions or remedies as Im afraid to do anything else to the house in case I have to dig up floors etc.

Also , evidence of rusting on the radiators - should I be thinking that I will need to replace the whole heating system some day.

Also could the leak be coming from the boiler and how would I find if it was in the boiler

By boiler, do you mean hot water cylinder? Did you dose the system with the correct amount of tech 7?

Thanks very much for the replies. I really appreciate it.

No I mean the oil boiler.

Could there be a leak from one of the pipes in the oil boiler. I think that I will look for the leak in the boiler first before digging up any pipes.

I wonder could there be a leak in one of the pipes in the oil burner.

If the leak is the pipes in the heating system, how will I find it?

If you can’t see it then chances are it’ll be near impossible to find it. How big is the system and how much tech7 did you use?

Remember a former colleague of mine had a similar issue and told me he got a water diviner in. He pinpointed it to within one floor tile and was spot on apparently. (can't remember how big he said the floor tile was though:pac:)

anyone else have any other suggestions.
It seems that the amount of water is so small, it could be weeping at a joint and could be very hard to find.

There are specialist companies that use gasses etc. in the pipes to find leaks.

Parents had a leak in the system before and it was detected by a guy who used sound to find the leak. Took two hours but was fairly accurate and found the leak under a tile. Google leak detection will find these lads in your area.
