The old element came out no probs, but new element just refuses to screw in, doesn't even start to purchase on threads. What's going on?
Same make and model being fitted.

    Hard to tell without photos.

Sure you didn't damage the threads while removing the old element? Easy way to check is see if the old element screws back in easily or not.

Check length of new element compared to old one. You may have to bend new one (slightly) to prevent it catching heating coil in your cylinder.

So I tried old element and it won't screw in either. I have a suspicion that there might be a slight warp, not enough for the eye to see. I was careful not to damage threads as I know how soft copper can be. I have a brass plug that I may use to take the warp out and realign the threads. I'll let you know how I get on.
