Hi Folks just a question im on the waiting list in weirs for you'll never guess... a Rolex Submariner Date :)

Im reading a lot of people saying the waiting list are crazy and normal people are being told to buy another watch, if they want the watch they want their watch, in the uk and the states etc

Im gonna put my name down on a few more lists in Ireland

What is the usual situation in Ireland is the length days, months or years? anyones experience & tips etc would be welcome :)

    Thanks!

As you know a Date Sub is a popular watch. The AD's dont get to decide what watches they get from Rolex they just get allotments of watches. There could be 3 Subs, a 4 full gold day-dates, and a iced out daytona and a no GMT's. Its pot luck for them, so they cannot tell you exactly when you will get a watch. If a watch comes in they will go to the list and work down it. If the first person cannot come in a get it immediately they will go to the second etc etc....if your 5th on the list it could be a long wait. I have been on two lists and neither have come to anything, I gave up on one and purchased used.

Many on the forum will have opinions on waiting on AD lists, and waiting times. But the fact of the matter is thats the way it is like it or lump it. Rolex have shut production down, so dont expect a load to come online after COVID either. People dont like the weird way some rolex sell over retail either and often proclaim the the bubble is about to burst. That may or may not be true, the bubble has been about to burst for years, and the sub is a safe enough bet as its not mad on the grey market.

So go into a AD. Ask to be put on the list and wait and hope. Its no harm to be nice and check in from time to time, just in case they remember you when one comes in. Other option is go to the grey market. Looking at the moment, they are not far of retail for used models, and they may reach parity with RRP soon enough. If you really want the watch you might find the time saved waiting is worth a few hundred and pay over retail. Its a balance between your time, your money and your desire for the watch. Or you might think of it that a Sub is a 9500 euro watch that the AD happens to sell for 8500.

Personally I would just go get one on the grey market and pay the premium, life is too short. You might find if you wait a few months you can pick them up a little cheaper, but thats a few months without the watch, so whats more valuable your time or your money.

There is one on adverts from ichrono (trusted indy reseller) from 2005 not a ceramic model, but the no holes case. A desirable model. 6900 asking, maybe 6500 after a haggle. The whole thing of a new watch is codswallop. Watches can be rendered as good as new for very little money so if its the model you want year means nothing, your name on the card means nothing, and honestly they are cheap enough to service and repair so warranty really means nothing. If not buying of a AD ensure the seller is trusted, the Sub is the most counter fitted watch around.

A second hand car, with a previous owner, even when mint and still from 2020, is worth thousands less than the same car brand new with only you as the new owner. I fail to see why this isn't the case with some watches (except for artificial scarcity). I'll never buy a second hand watch for more than the full retail price of a new one.

We have a dedicated thread about this by the way, thelibertyboy:

How hard is it to get the Rolex you want

And very interesting it is to read that thread again, to see how far off my predictions have been off, how little the market has changed despite brexit. I still maintain that SS Rolex is overvalued, but the take away is that if thats what your heart desires you need the patience of job or deep pockets. Unless you are a flipper, desirable rolex is always a good move in the long term. Even if you pay a little over today....you will be quids in a few years time, and you will have had the watch to enjoy while waiting.

That is the case with 99 percent of watches. And 99 percent of cars. Depreciation of 30% plus in year 1.

Then there are a small number of watches.....and cars (different high end ferrari, prob some teslas in the earlier days)......where their second hand price is generally higher than the RRP. Supply and demand.

It really is only a handful of Rolex, a few patek, a few AP and Richard Mille etc that trade above RRP.

Prob less than 0.0001% of all the watches in the world!

Well said, I think sometimes because these in demand watchs make up 90% of chatter on forums and online people forget that its only a few models from a few brands....problem is the want is so strong it feed the beast.

If Ferrari made a million cars a year I would agree with you :D

    Hey you mentioned cars!

Supply and demand drives the second hand price (even though I think much of the demand is false from people on multiple lists and speculators).

It’s not about how many are produced. A lange make less than 5 k watches a year and don’t have watches that trade above RRP as a general rule. Maybe their new odysseus as it is an application only piece (worse than being on a list!).

Porsche make nearly 300k cars and the RS models, GT models all sell way over retail second hand.

Ford makes around 6 million cars a year and the GT40 old and new GT sell way above retail :D

Plenty of lonely Rolex Cellini's in AD windows for 30% less than retail, or 15% off two tone small datejusts.

Sure tell me about supply and demand. Hyundai make more cars than Ford and their humble cheap family hatch, the Ioniq (electric), sells in the USA for full recommended retail price plus USD3,000

And back in about 2007 people were paying other people out to go ahead on the waiting list for that ultra desirable new small crossover, the Nissan Qashqai

No surprises you will never find me in any of those queues though. Or paying more than the new price for a common enough watch like a Rolex second hand.

I have one with name on, one just with stamp and one I signed myself. They don't care anymore as they are electronic cards and your registered centrally. My second hand ones one has a name and the other is service papers in my name. My omega have names. I just went and looked at and it the first time I opened the boxes since getting each watch. Personally I could not give a toss...

Same here, It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I just don’t see the value in the name on a card and if I did I suppose I could write my name on it anyway.

If you want the watch to be a true “keeper” and go on to be an heirloom of some sort it may be important. Otherwise it’s all the one.

Don’t know really lucky to get it this quick. Had a GMT 2 since 1998 but I it went missing from my local AD a couple of years ago, didn’t want another Rolex as my heart wasn’t in it but saw the sub online and thought they looked good.

The AD lost your GMT 2! Did you ever get it back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,372 ✭✭✭893bet

If I recall he never got it back but got a cheque after some fighting. They couldn’t even get a replacement watch. Not much good if it was an heirloom.........

An AD in cork if I recall.......narrows it down. Poor show but all it takes is a dishonest staff member. I often wonder with some of them super clones if they did a switcherroo on a few watches how long would it take for the owner to notice! They may not as the watch is in for a service so will come back without any old scratches and also....they are not expected it to be fake! I’d like to think I would notice but....
